Not just "I have a gun"..but what you are training your family to do..We have a metal ammo box in the corner of the bedroom furtherest from the door..in it is a prepaid call phone to dial 911,a superbright flashlight,5 extra buckshot shells for my wifes shotgun, and an extra magazine for my pistol...we all go to that point at once at the first sign of trouble or strange noise and conceal behind the bed and watch the door til help gets there..anybody coming in that door better be saying "POLICE"....your plan?

Deadbolted doors that need a key from the inside and outside. Security lighting on motion sensors. And of course, the M9 in the nightstand.
Additionally, we have take home patrol cars, I don't want the neon sign that says "A cop lives here" so I park down at the local 24 hour stop and rob, the owner was very gracious that I chose his lot to park in so it works out for both of us. I leave my personal car there and don't have to worry about it in the day and don't have to worry about attracting attention at night when I'm at home.

I keep a Glock beside my bed and a couple of swords in other locations around my apartment. No matter where I am, I make sure I am within reach of a weapon. I know some people might look down on having a sword for home defense, but with the training I've had it becomes worse for the intruder should I have the sword. I've made sure that only one of my doors works as an entrance/exit, forcing anyone to use the one main door. Also, I have a full tac vest set up in case someone is really serious about getting in.

I actually have several loaded weapons in various locations in my home. All my children are well trained in the function and safety of all weapons. I have an alarm system installed in my home and a dog who not only barks at intruders but will attack when needed.
For Joshua, I am glad you think that nobody in Australia has guns but the police. I know for a fact that this is not true. I worked with a number of Australians in Afghanistan and your country is no different than the UK where only criminals have guns.
I am not paranoid or phsychotic. I realize that the best way to protect my home and family is to be prepared for any type of home invasion and I pray that I never have to kill another human being but, rest assured that I will, without reservation, to protect life and limb.
It also helps to be actively involved in the community and to get to know who the officers are that work in your neighborhood or area.
If you are afraid of guns, you shouldn't own one but, if you have a gun for the protection of your home, it better be loaded. My children range from 18 down to 7 and I have no concern for their safety with guns. Knowledge is power.

I agree 100% . The best home defense mechanism I have besides my noisy dog and a 12 GA. shotgun (double barrel coach gun) is my defective inside front entrance door knob. Since it's well known that most home burglaries are committed by people you know or visit your home, when anyone come's into our house and they try to leave, my inside front door knob has to be turned 3 or 4 times before the door opens. everyone that has trouble with it always says to me "your door knob is broken", to which I always reply, "it's supposed to do that." they always ask me "Why?" and I always say "I don't run too fast and if anyone breaks into my house the door will slow them down long enough so I can shoot them in the back." It must work, no one has tried it yet. It scares the crap out of "Jehova's Witnesses" and keeps repeat visitations by insurance salesmen at a minimum to boot.

I have a cowardly dog, he doesn't even bite his own fleas, but he is one heck of an alarm system. Once he "goes off", I grab the kel light and my 44. My wife, gets the phone. She doesn't her me say that it's O.K., she speed dials 911. She then gets her .40 S&W and gets the grandkids to our room.
Anyone I find in the house gets one warning that I am armed. If they choose to run from the house, that's fine. If they try anything else, they can play catch with .44 cal. lead.

Sounds weird but I actually have a hunting knife in my night stand beside my bed. More for comfort than anything. Probably wouldn't do me that much good. But my house does have bars over the windows and a gate over my door. If someone wanted in here, they'd want it pretty damn bad. It's like Fort Fcuking Knox. (live in Mexico at the moment) @Kent--holy ****! How do I get my hands on one of those?? lol

I have a loaded Baretta next to my bed, a flashlight and a cell phone. If someone comes into my house while I'm sleeping then I will put them to sleep permanently.
