I have a 1998 New Beetle that will not start. I was driving it just fine and one day I parked it, came out of the store and it wouldnt start. I waited a few minutes and tried it again and it finally went. This has happened a couple times but the other day I was getting read for work and was about to leave but it wouldnt start at all. The engine turns over and I can hear the fuel pump click on and all the dash lights come on but it never actually starts. Any ideas? Fuel relay switch maybe?

Cars run on three things fuel, air and spark.

I would guess that you have to replace the fuel fllter thats the cheapest and easiest. When you go to start the car all that crap in the filter plugs it up but when you stop the crap settles back down and the fuel flows but thats just a guess.

OK.. they guy above me is right.. but let's see if we can give you a way of finding out which it might be

1: Fuel: Locate the line to the carb and disconnect it. Hold it in an empty glass and have someone crank the engine. If no gas is pumped into the glass the prob. lies with the fuel delivery. (Silly question, but there IS gas in the tank - right?). Actually, as I think about it, do step 3 before you do step 1.. just to be safe.

2) Air.. Remove the air filter and check the carb. Is the choke locked shut. Will it open and close easily or has it, effectively, blocked the carb.'s throat. If it is an electric choke, does it open as it electrially warms? Is the air filter clogged beyond belief ? If the choke is jammed shut, you need to repair the carb.

3) Ignition: get a pair of household rubber gloves and pull one of the spark plugs. Hold it just above the engine block and have someone crank the engine (try not to lean on the car too). You should see a serious spark leap from the plug wire to the engine block. ( If you are leaning on the car it may leap somewhere less visible but definately noticible.). No spark? Check the timing, the coil, the cap (look for a crack or broken part) the rotor, .. in short just do a tuneup on the distributer and check your coil.

Hope that helps...................
