Shimano derailleur not hanging down at a right angel. Not bent. How to adjust? Chain is too slack.?

Question

so when you back pedel, the chain falls off the front sprocket. Is there some way to adjust the derailluer so that it hangs down at the correct angle?
So far I've only seen information on how to adjust the derailleur for sideways back and for movement to position the chain from sprocket to sprocket. Nothing about the derailleur hanging down at the correct angle creating a lack of tension along the chain..

Please advise on how to fix this problem. Thanks..

There is a tension screw on the rear of most derailleurs to give a little adjustment for angle. It really isn't that much though. Generally, if there is not enough chain tension, it is because the chain is too long. Try removing a couple of links and see what happens. The rule of thumb is that the rear derailleur should be perpendicular to the group when the chain is on the big chain ring and smallest cog.

Place the chain/gears in the small chain ring up front and small cog on back. Then use the longest chain possible but the rear derailleur must still be pulling tension on chain. This should allow you to get onto the big ring and also the big rear cog at the same time. If still falls off when pedaling back then you have a bent rear derailleur.
