I was told that (and am not sure if it is true) whatever exercise you do in the day the calories won't burn off until you are asleep, therefore, the more sleep you get the better, as far as losing weight is concerned.

Not true. Calories are a non-physical measure of how much energy a food contains and/or the body burns when performing it's day-to-day functions. Every time your body moves on it's own impulses, etc. (breathing, heartbeat, neurons firing, etc.) your calorie gauge goes down. It's like fuel.

How many calories do you burn while sleeping?
Mukti
Santa Cruz, California

Dear Mukti:
Does the disclaimer "your results may vary" sound familiar? It should, because it follows nearly every weight-loss commercial (usually in a voice moving at the speed of light). As it turns out, sleeping should come with the same caveat. The amount of calories burned depends greatly on the person.
This weight-loss calculator from FitWatch.com asked us to enter our weight and how long we planned to sleep. According to the ensuing calculations, a 160-pound person who sleeps eight hours will lose roughly 549 calories in the process. Not as much as we'd hoped, but not bad for doing nothing.

Before you sign up for the "all-you-can-sleep" diet, keep in mind there are better ways to burn calories while doing little to no exercise. For example, sitting while talking on the phone for eight hours will burn 914 calories. Driving a car for eight hours will knock off around 1,219 calories. And standing in a casino for eight hours will burn about 1,402 calories (though you may burn through some money while you're at it).

Of course, nothing beats good ol' fashioned exercise. If staying healthy's the ultimate goal, even a short walk can go a long way.

It depends on your metabolism. The more active you are and the better your diet is, the higher your metabolism is. When your metabolism is fast then your burning calories most of the day. Your metabolism actually slows down at night so I don't believe your burning MORE calories. And sorry to the person above but sleeping more DOES NOT make you lose more weight!! You need ACTIVITY to lose weight.

nooooooooooo!!!!! There is no shred of truth to this. you burn cals constantly, but much more when your awake. especially during exercise. During a good workout you can burn 800 kcals. You wont burn even close to that during sleep even if you sleep for 12 hours, which isnt recommended. It might not be a good idea to take weight loss advice from the person that told this info.
.....if that was the truth, noone would be online answering questions this late, we would all be in bed trying to lose weight.

I have been sleeping 10-12 hrs for months and have lost nothing. You burn cals sleeping but not close to working out, your body goes into cruz control when sleeping funtioning on little, and uses fat and stored energy I believe not food.

Yes, in fact you burn more calories sleeping than you do watching television. Also when you sleep, you eat less, than when you're awake. So a lot of sleep can even help you lose weight.
