I think you have the order correct already. Gas prices is the first item on the list.

Driving on electricity is the cheapest way to go. I know this to be true, I drive an electric car (a very old one.) My electricity cost is only about a penny per mile. And while a cutting edge electric car is expensive (like this one, which has batteries that charge in only 10 minutes: http://www.phoenixmotorcars.com ), there are also less expensive electric cars out there.

I bought my own freeway-capable electric car off eBay for only $2000. Here's some info on electric cars, including where to find cheap ones:

I think some people feel so guilty about being an American and having so much of everything, they have to do this to feel better.

Everyone likes to feel good about themselves . Kinda like giving to charity. When you do it you feel good but you almost always let someone know you did it. That's the frosting on the cake.

Some people may do it to feel superior to others, that THEY would be more concerned than just the average Joe.

Hey, make them affordable and able to do what my GMC Pick up does and I'll buy one. ( just to make myself feel good)
