You should check out petfinder.com. You can look at all different dogs in your area that need a home. They let you know their temperment and whether they are good with dogs, cats, and kids. They have dogs from puppies to senior dogs. It really depends on if you want a dog with a lot of energy or one that requires a yard or not. There are a lot of different qualities about a dog and its new owner that should meet up so it really depends on what you're looking for on what kind you should get. Whatever you do, don't buy a dog from a petstore. A lot of them use puppymills where dog are treated horribly and don't necessarily check their health all that well. If you use a breeder check their background and ask to see where the dogs are kept, and any paperwork on the dog's health, etc. If you get a dog off of petfinder.com not only are you saving a dog's life, but it's also a lot cheaper than a petstore too, and if you're looking for a purebred they sometimes have those too. Sorry for not specifying a breed of dog for you, but it really depends on the person on what type of dog they should get.

Consider first a few details. Do you own your own home? Do you live in an apartment? Do you have a yard? Are you willing to walk the dog twice a day, morning and evening...at least?
If you rent, your options decrease greatly if you own a dog or any pet. The bigger the dog, the bigger the poop. Consider that when you are walking your dog and need to "bag it" in the park or on the sidewalk. Big dogs are great, don't get me wrong! Just think about how much time you plan to devote to your new companion. Cats are fairly independent but dogs are needy creatures which require lots of love, praise, play and companionship. You may want to invest in a carpet cleaner like a Hoover Steam cleaner. Good luck and God Bless!

for a first dog, I'd recommend a mixed breed. Adopt a dog from your local shelter. Mixed breeds are usually more mellow, and have less problems than pure breeds. Depending on the size, a retriever mix is a good choice. Terriers sometimes have issues if not trained, but once in a while, you can find a sweet one. I'd stay away from breeds like sharpeis, chows, and rotties as a first dog. Dog training is a must for all dogs. So be sure to enroll in a good obedience class.

There are several things to consider when getting a dog.
These are just a few things to think about:
What kind of residence do you live in?
Do you have a yard?
Are you able to exercise your dog daily?
Do small children or elderly people live with you?
How active and energetic are you?
What size dog do you want?
Can you groom your dog or afford to take it to a groomer?
Do you have other pets the dog would interact with?
Try taking the test here:

well it depends on a lot of things how big your yard is how much you want to spend on its health like vet bills food toys training etc, weather you have time to walk it for 30 Min's a day and play with it how committed you are to training it to Oby you coz it doesn't happen over night potty training it well i could go on all day i suggest finding a breed that has no serious hereditary problems so you would need to go to a professional breeder so you can find out the history and a small to medium size dog is good coz you have to use body language to let the dog know your the boss

I'm getting a German Shepherd Dog later this year. They are amazing dogs. Mine will have her therapy certification and go visit children and others that need cheering up. Some are amazing protection dogs, some are over grown rugs. Depending on who you get you dog from is if your dog will have the true breed characteristics. This is who I'm getting mine from: www.weberhausgsd.com

get a dog that makes you happy. think about thing that may frustrate you about owning a dog. things like shedding, where it will sleep, inside or outside dog, how much you are willing to spend on its health, how big you want it to be, etc. i would go to several dog pounds in your area and select on of them.

get a dog that you really like. don't force yourself to like a dog that you don't like. Get a nice shelter dog. if you don't want a shelter dog, then buy a pomeranian pup!!! they're soooooooo cute
