I was diagnosed with depression 6 years ago, and have been on medication for it off and on since then. I'm looking into joining the military and according to most sources, there isn't any way to get around this diagnosis unless I've been off the meds for at least 1 year. I'm pretty sure I need the meds; I feel a whole lot better and function better when on them. So far I've only looked into the Army, any one know if it's any different with other branches? Thanks!

I don't think that you can join with a preexisting psychological problem. Military life is difficult enough with the things you would see and if they know you have depression issues without that lifestyle it is highly unlikely they would let you join up.

The air force is the hardest to get into when you've been diagnosed with anything they classify as a personality disorder. You can try to join the army, they do have waivers but I'm not exactly sure what the process is. You'll be sent to doctors to medically clear you. As long as you take your medicine as directed, I don't see why it should be a problem. Call a recruiter and they will tell you what you need to know.

the Army is the easiest to get into, so it' a up hill climb with the others, especially the Air force. You really don't have much chance with a history of depression with medication, Sorry don't take it personal, but your not what there looking for at this time. Now if there was a draft, that would change everything, but I don't think thats going to happen no time soon.

you are going on a suicide mission if you are thinking of joining the army. do you realize we are in a war right now and there are thousands of people getting killed there day by day?? i realize its an honorable thing to do by joining the military, and someone does have to do it but think it through. im sure many of the people that died didnt think it all the way through and didnt know they would be put in that situation.

but as far as your question goes, i think theyre taking anyone they could get now. that should give you a hint as how much the government cares about you.

Yes you can. I did! i just had to be off untill all my training was over and once i got to my duty station i told my squad leader i had to go to mental health and that was that. i was on zoloft in afghanistan. i was in the army, but i'm out now. just don't tell anyone, and take your meds till the day you leave. excercise will help with that a lot and trust you will do a lot of it. besides you will be too tired to worry about anything depressing.

i had pts too. my x husband used to beat me for 5 years and tried to kill me in front of my kids.

Would you hand a weapon to someone who was depressed?
Would you send someone in to battle who may be cut off from a supply line, including drugs that keep them stable in a critical combat situation?

Now, if you can get off the drugs, you can get this book:
Feeling Good: The new mood therapy
by ?David Burns?

If you want to go in depth, you can go to www.dianetics.org - I've seen first hand some stunning results.

They won't take you if you take meds. A guy in my area killed himself because the marines turned him down because he was taking pills.
