My large puppy eats eukanuba puppy food for large breeds, and my yorkie eats eukanuba for small breeds. For some reason my yorkie eats the large breed food. She will no longer eat her own food. Will this have any effect on her growth or her health?

I have asked my vet, he says that she will be fine, i do feed her Eukanuba Puppy Small Breed Formula, but like i said lately it seems that she wont eat her own food, and i wanted to know if eating the large breed food would make her bigger. Thanks for all the great answers.

Your yorkie should be on the eukanuba small breed puppy growth formula. I talked to a eukanuba rep about a month ago about this exact issue for my little crestie. I also have a 3.3 lbs yorkie who ate this as well.
The foods really are made for different types of dogs though, and with a 3lbs dog they are fragile enough, that you should really be careful what it eats, especially if it can affect it's size. There are different things in different amounts in the small breed and large breed dog food so you puppy will be much healthier on the proper diet.
To get him to go back to eating his original food, you can mix in some wet food to make it more appetizing or just keep him away from the other dogs food. He'll get hungry enough to eat his own food after a missed meal or two. You can also slow start adding his own food with the other type of food, so that he doesn't notice the transition.
But to answer the questions you asked, no it won't make your dog grow bigger if he eats large breed food. It is a choking hazard though. I know with mine, a piece of large dog kibble is about the right size to block his throat, so you'll have to be careful.

Your yorkie definitely should not be eating large breed puppy food. It's designed to help a large breed puppy build the essential muscle and bone mass during the puppy's first year of life. A large breed puppy will grow much more and at a much great speed then a small breed. A small breed puppy food is designed for a small breed who can be susceptible to hypoglycemia. Feed the puppies seperate and after the puppies have eaten take up any uneaten portions to guarantee that the yorkie doesn't get any more of the large puppy's food.

Your Yorkie eating large breed puppy food probaly won't have any major problems. Smaller dogs grow quicker and hit maturity much early then larger breeds the food is made considering this. If it was the other way around your large breed eating small breed you could have major problems with every thing would be growing to fast and out of sink. But your yorkie would be just fine.

Well now that just seems like a silly question to me. Except for the health part.
I am no expert, but I would feel it is safe to assume that it is not a good idea to feed a small breed dog the nutrients that a large breed requires for the amount of growth and activity it experiences. The larger breed will burn more calories, etc, than the small breed, and so their food will be designed to replace those nutrients and caloric requirements.
If you feed your small breed puppy the large breed food, you could be facing some serious health problems in the future, and I would definitely be seeking veterinarian advice about the subject.

I'm pretty sure it won't hurt the yorkie but she should really be eating food designed for her small size. Small breeds and large breeds differ in many more ways than just size. They digest food differently for one and small dog food is better on their stomaches than the large breed food. It's best to ask your vet but if I were you I would keep their food seperate if possible.

I would think that there are too many calories in the large breed for her. And one of the biggest problems for dogs (especially small dogs) is weight. Check with your vet to be sure all will be okay if she continues to eat the large breed food. Otherwise, you'll just have to be tougher about her eating her food only. Good Luck!

Being a small breed, your Yorkie should be eating food appropriate to her size. She has little teeth and probably is not as physically active as a larger breed. Also if she is refusing the smaller type of dog food, just put her regular size serving into a baggie and smash it a up a bit to make it easier for her to chew.

Large breed puppy food is usually designed to slow the growth of large breed puppies down to an appropriate rate, to prevent them from growing too large too quickly. So I wouldn't worry about her growing more - but you might ask your vet if there's any harm!
