Most Christians are theists but not all theists are Christians. Theism is a theological idea on the relationship of "god" to the universe.
In simple terms the three options are Deism, God being totally apart from the world or physical creation. Theism holds that God is both in and apart from creation. Pantheism is a belief in two or more Gods. Pantheism has also become the folder where people file the idea that the natural universe is God; mother earth, god of forces, etc.
I use creation here in a very loose sense. The difference between these three ideas can be very wide or very close.
Deism - god apart
Theism - god in and apart
Pantheism - many gods, everything is god, forces, etc.

Theists roots to the Greek word theos, which was the word "God". Many think Theos means Theology but it doesn't. It literally means "Godists"
Christians are Theists just like Muslims, Jews, and many Hindus are Theists.
Atheists, thus, means "no God". It doesn't mean "no religion" and hence someone may be an Atheist but still be religious (i.e. many Hindus). Oh. That is because in the Greek when an 'a' preceded something it meant "no _____". For instance Gnostic was the Greek word "to know" and thus "agnostic" means "does not know" in essence.

Theists do believe in God.
I am a Theist but I am not a Christian because I don't believe in the Christian god or the Christian religion.

Christians are different from Theists in general. Christians believe that through the Bible God has revealed who He is and what His plans are for the human race. They believe that God has sent His Son Jesus Christ into the world to die for our sins that we may be forgiven and enter into a relationship with God.
Theists, however, have no direct knowledge of their god or of his purposes. They infer his existence by various means, but what he is doing in the world they know not. They don't know what is in the hereafter either. They just don't know what their god is like. They see creation and believe that he exists, but unlike the Christians who learn to trust in God's help, the Theist has no reason to reach out to their god and trust in him.

Jews, Muslims and Hindus are theists. They are not Christians. Christians are followers of Jesus Christ. "Theist" is the more inclusive term.

You are incorrect in your understanding.
The theist is a person that believes in an all-powerful supernatural entity or entities. This includes monotheists, polytheists, deists, dystheists, transtheists, etc.
Christians are those that believe in a specific brand of theistic philosophy where they worship God, Jesus, etc.
Its like squares and rectangles. All squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares.
