A Veterinarian informed me years ago this is one way for dogs to cool off from excessive body temperature.

hot air rises, cold air sinks. So, the floor stays cool. Your dog has less hair on the inside of his legs so the cool air can directly touch his stomache. I bet if he does this most often on a hardwood/tile floor than on the carpet, as those floors stay cooler. My cocker has a full show coat and does this pretty often. I can't wait until he is a champion so that I can cut all that fur off.

I have a 16 yr old all American mutt that still lays like this. It must be a comfortable position for her as other dogs I've had stopped using this position after puppy hood. My daughter calls it her chicken leg position. She will lay like this in any weather so I don't think it is the temperature. Maybe she's double jointed?

Yes, to keep himself cool, it's comfy for dogs.

Do you mean he has his hind legs stretched out behind though instead of tucked in? This can be a sign of hip problems, like hip dysplasia. I'm not saying this is an immediate problem, but be aware that some breeds are predisposed to it (particularly labradors and german shepherds) and it can cause them problems in later life.

Some dogs find that position comfortable, like stretching out. My beagle lays like that a lot. She will do it in the sun, napping, or just stretch out in the middle of her nap, to be in a different position. It is super cute.

If he is hot and the floor is cool, it will help to cool him off.
The same if he is cold and the floor is warm - it will warm him.

But mainly, He is relax and comfortable that way.
