You were born in Canada, but are you a Canadian citizen? If you gave up your citzenship then you have to obtain a passport from the country you are a citizen of. If you are within Canada, you can pick up the necessary paper work at a postal outlet, a passport office, or get them online.

You must have:

proof of citizenship (original they don't accept photocopies) if you don't have that you will have to obtain a replacement.

supporting document for identification that holds your signature. they will accept photocopies of this, but any photocopy must be signed by your guarantor.

a photo from a commercial photographer that adheres to passport photo specifications.

Remember to dot all your i's and cross all your t's, missing or incomplete information will result in your starting the process all over again. Any questions you have can be answered by phoning 1-800-567-6868 or you can go online

Where are you? If you are in Canada you can pick it up at any postal outlet. If somewhere else you can pick it up at any embassy or Consulate. You can also get it online at the Passport Canada website.

You are right, there is no difference in Canada between apply the first time or applying again.

Not sure what you mean about being born in Canada and not renewing it, but you can apply for it online here: http://canadaonline.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?zi=1/XJ&sdn=canadaonline&cdn=newsissues&tm=6&gps=38_553_1276_844&f=00&tt=2&bt=1&bts=1&zu=http%3A//www.ppt.gc.ca/forms/index.aspx%3Flang%3De

Just be sure to have a printer as well; you'll need to print the forms, then you can bypass the big lineups at the passport office.

Good luck.
