You're right!

If you activate your Vista copy, this activation will be permanent. You will be able to use your product key eternally if you register your copy the right way.

If someone tries to use your key, it will install the Vista copy correctly, but won't be able to register and activate the copy, due to your registration.

You can only activate the Windows Copy using your data. For example, if you need to format your HD and install your Vista again, you'll need to activate it again and using your data you will activate it normally.

Regards!

To lauralie5005:

Yes, Windows Vista Product Activation and Validation is easy. You need no worry about the product key. When you activate your copy of Windows Vista, Microsoft only collect hardware information from your PC for identity purpose without knowing who you are.

Since almost every PC's hardware contains unique chip ID, thus Microsoft and other software vendors (where their products required Activation too) can identify that your PC is having a genuine product.

We don't have same ID for every hardware component. That's the reason when you change/upgrade your PC's essential component like processor, you are required to activate your copy of Windows and/or other Activation featured software once again. And here, no second PC can be activated with the Product Key you are having.

If you plan to transfer your copy Windows Vista to another PC later without purchasing *second license (*discount may be offered) from Microsoft. Please contact Microsoft service center to allow them assisting you to transfer Windows Vista license to the new PC.

And lastly, it's okay and unlimited time for Activation, as long as you are using the same PC.
BEST REGARDS,
Jack

your safe if you activated online, and yes it is permanent though you will only be able to install it one more time should your computer go down, that is the big sticking point at the moment with vista.... did you read the license agreement?

no one will be able to use your product key so your save there
