Do you have a favorite color for a great dane? I have a black dane a blue dane and now a merle and i think the merle is really cute but I know merle is not accepted for show dogs but she's just a family pet - and we love her.

Merles are very pretty and uniquely marked. There are no two marked the same. No, they aren't an accepted show color because they should not be used in a breeding program but they make wonderful companions. While they can't be shown in breed (conformation) they can compete in obedience, rally, agility, etc.

I've owned Danes for over 25 years. I've had rescues as well as Danes from breeders. I currently have a 10 month old fawn boy who I show in conformation and eventually wil lshow in obedience and rally and a 5 year old fawn girl who is now retired from the ring that has her obedience and rally titles and is a certified therapy dog. My Danes also have their CGC.

ALL Dane colors are accepted by AKC as long as both parents are AKC registered..Only 6 colors are accepted by the GDCA for showing in conformation..brindle, fawn, black, blue, harlequin, mantle (use to be called Boston). All other colors are considered mismarks and are not suppose to be used in breeding programs this is why they are not accepted in the conformation ring.

My favorite is the Merlaquins (like a harlaquin but it has merle spots instead of black ones), then merles and harlaquins. I like all danes though.

Harlequin is my favorite color, and merle after that. I had a harlequin and he a beautiful dog, and I think the merle's are also beautifully colored. I don't really like the fawns, even though they are one of the six accepted colors. I think it looks too plain on such an exquisite dog as the dane.

The merles are beautiful, did not know that was a fault.
I think my absolute fave color for the Dane is a Harlequin. We have two that come to the doggie daycare where I work, their names are Buster and Alexander. (LOVE that!) and they are both absolute dolls.
Recently had a tuxedo pup (all black except white paws and bib) come in to board over the weekend, he was hilarious. How long does it take to grow into those ears? He put me in mind of a black and white donkey.
Alexander the Great is still my ideal Dane...

Black is a dominate shade in canines. Merle is a recessive gene. Merles are additionally from breeding Harlequin Danes. So a black /merle would be generally black, some merles and in step with possibility a heavy harlequin. Merles and Bostons/mantles have been as quickly as faults. yet Boston/Mantles produce great finding harlequins devoid of making as many merles. So there have been bred yet in no way shown till some years in the past. Harl to harl produces distinctive merles or all white deaf domestic canines. maximum danes are bred in accordance to shade. Harl to harl or Boston Black to black Fawn to Fawn Brindle to brindle. This stored the breed strains sparkling. in case you bypass a fawn to a harl you will get a cool colored dogs. same with crossing different colorings.

Beautiful. I like the fawn ones with the black masks the most but grey merle with white is really pretty, too.

I still love a good Brindle but there is no bad color on a dane. Have you checked out the "Dane of a different color" web page? Some really odd colored dog if all the links still work. Check it out.
Another cool one is ChromaDane

I personally love Boston danes (black and white - not Harlequin, like a Boston Terrier looks) best and then fawn danes are my second favorites.

Merle danes are beautiful dogs, despite not being acceptable show colors.

Only AKC accepted colors:
Fawn
Brindle
Black
Harlequin
Blue
Mantle
