We bought him at 3 months already neutered. He is now 13 months. Jake can get agressive with a stick or bone locking his jaw, but but once someone yells he cowers and lays down. We have only smacked him a few times when he's reallly bad (tearing up the couch--- eating the sleeve of my biker jacket) so he's not a constantly hit dog. Can anyone give a little advice?

First of all, lock jaw is a fatal disease that is rare in most dogs. A Pit Bull can only have "lock jaw" if he has the disease, otherwise, it's just a myth.

Second of all, why do you want him to be tougher? You just want him not to cower when you yell? Well STOP hitting him then, what would you do if somebody hit you constantly? Continue on and be happy? I doubt it.

and third, if you want him to be "meaner" just to make you look "tougher", well, perhaps you should just get a life. Having a "mean" dog is not at all considered "cool" and would actually make you look more "whimpier" then it would "tough."

EDIT: He's chewing on the couch because he wants ATTENTION! Be nice to him, reward him when he's good, scold him when he's bad (NO HITTING), get him trained properly and STOP HITTING HIM. It's people like you who give these dogs a bad reputation..

You should never hit your dog that isn't going to teach him not to tear the couch or eat your jacket , it's only going to teach him to fear you. Why would you want to ruin your dog's temperment by making him meaner ? I don't know where you live but here in Ontario, Canada there is now a pitbull ban, probably because people like you get the pitbull for the appearance and stereotype of being a mean dog, but never really think about how you are destroying your dog. By making your dog mean you are limiting his future.. meaning what if you have to give him away later on in life , who will want a mean dog? Or maybe he will bite someone and then have to be put down all because YOU didn't want a nice, gentle dog to have fun with, YOU wanted a mean dog for the appearance !! Just think about it for a while, maybe you aren't ready to have a dog !!

Hiya,

I notice that everyone else has been very quick to say that you're a bad dog owner for wanting your pup to be "meaner" etc. but I think the question was just easily misread.

I suspect that you don't actually intend to say "meaner", but perhaps that you'd like him to be less afraid?

I'm no expert by any means, but my first piece of advice would be to recognize that by grovelling and cowering he is afraid, and afraid for a reason (someone is yelling - I get afraid when someone yells too!). I assume he thinks you're going to hit him, he knows that you're capable of it after-all.

Secondly, get some help with training him positively - you know, treats and rewards and so on. You never, ever need to hit a dog, it just doesn't work. There's some amazing books out there - try "Culture Clash" by Jean Donaldson for example.

With patience, consistency and kindness you'll raise a beautiful, confident and well-behaved dog. So good-luck, I hope it all works out.

Dude why would you want a mean dog? hitting an animal is NEVER okay. 0ne day you will hit that dog and he will get even. Tell me how tough would you feel now if someone removed your package before you were 10? my suggestion for you is to find a home for the dog where he can be loved for what he is and not encouraged to be a maniac. am willing to bet he ate the sleeve off the biker jacket because he knew you did not need it, leather is not required on a bicycle. As for the couch? He just did not want you to have anyplace to sit hoping you'd just leave.

you are an idiot. 1) if he was already a year old when you got him how do you know hes not an abused dog? 2) I have been working my a$$ off for a year now to get people to try to stop BSL legislation and the banning of this breed also trying to overturn BSL laws all over the united states and IDIOTS like YOU are ruining it for me! What you need to do is go to the nearest pitty rescue, hand over the dog, when they have you fill out the paperwork in the WHY ARE YOU GIVING UP THIS ANIMAL portion write this word for word: I AM AN IDIOT AND IRRESPONSIBLE OWNER WHO DOES NOT DESERVE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF A PET. 3) If you insist on keeping your dog go up and re-read what hunny wrote about the kennel. Stop hitting that pitty! 4) If you cannot refrain from being a moron at least be smart enough not to share your idiocy with the world.

WTF? cities all over the United states are BANNING and DESTROYING this breed and you want to make your dog Meaner? Is your head stuck up other areas of oyur anatomy?! 1) you should NOT be hitting your dog. Get a crate, if he chews something up pick up or point to the item then to him and tell him NO! BAD DOG! then tell him to KENNEL once he gets in the crate, lock the door, after 10 minutes let him out. Time-outs are much better punishment for multiple reasons. also pittys are avid chewers and he is in teething stage make sure he has plentyof chew bones this will help stop him from cheing stuff up. 2) If you are worried about him not being protective enough trust me once he is grown if someone tries to break in they will feel his wrath, pittys are naturally protective and no matter how sweet and non-agressive they are on a day-to-day basis they are very aggressive to a percieved threat of home or owner. Let your dog be who he is, treat him right and his love and loyalty to you for that will make sure that he is the best gaurd dog you could have regardless of breed.

We can only hope that when he does decide to turn mean from the treatment he's had that he will take it all out on you. Preferably the lock jaw on your balls or throat.
A dog will automatically protect you if your in danger if you have treat him with respect and loved him.
I hope you come back as a dog in your next life and get some sick **** owner like you.

Why the HECK do you want a Pit bull to become MORE aggressive? Don't you give a crap that Pit bulls are becoming BANNED from certain states because of people like YOURSELF. You do not deserve to own a dog, especially one that has a terrible reputation for being aggressive. 13 months old and already shows aggression to sticks? GIVE THE DOG UP TO A HUMANE SOCIETY AND GO SEE ALL THE AGGRESSIVE PITS THERE. YOU ARE ADDING TO THAT PROBLEM. ONCE BEAUTIFUL PITS GET BANNED IN THE US, YOU WILL BE ONE OF THE MANY PEOPLE TO THANK FOR TURNING A BEAUTIFUL BREED INTO SOMETHING THAT WILL MAKE SOMEONE SCARED TO DEATH.

Well you don't want him meaner that's for sure. Try obedience school. Or spend more time with Jake when you are at home and when you have to leave for work or something get a large/medium cage for little Jake to be in while you gone.
