your dogs saw the canidae as a treat because they are used to eating the royal canin all the time. Thats wonderful that they were so excited about the switch some dogs are very loyal to a certain food. But lucky you they love the new stuff!! I saw the same thing happen with a pomeranian I cared for it was very funny her owner swore up and down that her dog was the pickiest dog ever and only ate this one particular brand and type of dog food but when I gave the dog a similar type but different healthier brand she refused to eat her own food and ate more then she normally ate because she liked it better!! It turned out it was really the owner who was the picky one she thought the brand she bought was the best brand out there and didnt want to switch to what her dog preferred!!! (Even though they cost the same some people think that if a vet recommends a brand that the vets word is golden and will never buy another kind even though if they were to ask would find out from their vet that others are just as great)

Something (almost) similar happened when I switched my dogs from Hill's Science Diet to Solid Gold several years ago (I now feed Canidae)
I mixed the two foods 50/50 for about a week; the first two days they ate the Hills and left the Solid Gold in the bowl; then abruptly on day 3 they ate the Solid Gold and left the Hill's. So much for a gradual switch over!
I ended up putting the rest of the Hill's in the bird feeder.

Yes, it happened to me, but my dog picked out the old dog food and left the new! You are very lucky your dog loves the new, better food. Congratulations on picking such a great food to your dog. If he doesn't have any stomach upset, after a few days I would just start giving him the Canidae. Smart doggie!

Did you know Royal Canin was added to the recall list? This just happened in the last couple days. You might want to check this out.

Sure this is real common. Your dog clearly likes the Canidae better that the older dog food. Sounds like you have made your dog happy.

I have never had that happen with a dog, but with different kinds of animals, yes. Canidae is a great food!

Yes I have. My dog Pennylane was a funny one about her food(she passed away last year 16 years old) When she was a puppy we gave her Purina Puppy Chow and continued on the Purina diet. Well one time I got a free sample of Pedigree or Iams and she would not touch this food, she sniffed at it took one nibble and then she dumped her bowl over. So we stuck with the Purina. Sounds like your dogs like the Royal better

Good luck with your new food. I personally don't buy name brand food. I much prefer to go to my local feed store, where ranchers and breeders go, and buy bulk, dry food. I get the correct formula for the time of year and dog activity.
This is quality bulk food that has far less processing and no added colors or "tastes" that name brand foods add. Remember the appearance and name of the food is strictly for the human's benefit.
Leave the food down for 15 minutes and then remove, do this twice a day at regular times. The dog will eat and he will learn that you control his resources not him.

I heard Royal Canin was just added to the tainted food list. Check it out. I've heard that Flint River is supposed to be really good.

Yes I have seen it many time as a matter of fact presently I own a dog that is an expert at picking out only what he likes and it is pretty funny to watch him do it because if he gets a piece he does not want he literally spits it out. He does not like offal but I try to sneak it in and it never works.
I think it is pretty common among dogs.
