is there such a big difference in the two? i am a serious music fan of some obscure bands, and have strong music likes and dislikes. i have a relatively short commute to work, but commercials and crappy music drive me crazy, as i wind up channel surfing all the time, which can be unsafe. any thoughts?

True:
Either! they are merging! So really they will be one and the same within aprx the next year. Get which ever one you like the player for better. The Stations will be the same.
Educated guess:
The hardware will be different (XM players will operate on the same XM satellites as now, and Sirius the Sirius Satellites) Maybe if you have friends who have them see which gets better reception where you are(who has more problems with interference etc.). Either way you'll have the same programming and stations. They haven't released the details on the merger yet, only that the programing will be combined.

I thought they were merging...but in the meantime, XM: 2 satellites, Sirius: 1 satellite. Sirius cuts out more than XM, too. I don't know about music selection differences, however.

Well Sirius almost bought XM but the government stop it because they would have ended up controling the Sat Radio Industry.

Check out the differences for example:

Sirius has: Howard Stern and NASCAR

XM has: Ellen and the most sport selcetion

They are both in the process of merging. There is nothing better than satellite radio. Makes you wish your commute was longer. I have XM in all my cars, at home and at work. Its on all day. They give you a free trial for a month or so, you should try it.

I have sirius. It works fine, once i get out of town. Real crappy in town. I lose it everytime I come to an intersection. :( I heard that xm and sirius will become one at the end of this year. So you don't have to choose.
