I always hear about, the valley, and i know it is in Southern California, but there are alot of valleys in that area. When people refer to "were going to the valley", or, "oh my gosh, you drove all the way to the valley"? Which valley, it is driving me crazy.

dj.....We mean the northern part of Los Angeles County, which is largely the San Fernando valley. (As in the old movie "VALLEY GIRL")...In very general terms the county is cut in half by a mountain range, below the mountain range is "THE BASIN" and above the mountain range "OVER THE HILL" is the valley....Yes, you are right the are an endless number of actual valleys....It's like when New Yorkers say they are going to the city...they mean Manhattan Island, although there are actually many cities there....we say other weird stuff too....You will quickly get used to it when you are here...Good Luck...Oh. please don't go crazy...

I was going to be a wiseacre and give you a dictionary definition of "valley." I decided to elucidate, instead.

The Valley, i.e. the San Fernando Valley, is separated from LA proper, aka "The Westside" by the Santa Monica Mountain range.

The only way to drive from one place to the other is either the freeway, in particular the dreaded 405 freeway, or canyon roads, i.e. Laurel Canyon, Beverly Glen, et al.

Thanks to our ever-burgeoning population, these transit routes are clogged to the point where you can almost walk to your destination faster than you can drive there.

The Westside had long looked down it's nose at it's poor valley relations, to their detriment.

There's a reason the valley tried to secede from the city a few years ago.

It almost always means the San Fernando Valley. In a few local areas it might mean the San Gabriel Valley. If you are away from the LA area it might even mean the Central Valley or the San Joaquin Valley. But in So Cal its almost always the SFV.

OHMYGAW! (LOL)

It's the San Fernando Valley, the source of so much American slang (such as OMG and "dude") since the 1980's. It was popularized in the Frank Zappa song "Valley Girl", as well as "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" and many other movies. (Want to see Oscar-winning actor Forest Whittaker in his first big role? Rent that movie, it's a hoot. Sean Penn as Jeff Spicoli is hilarious, dude!)
