The Macs now use Intel based processors, but different motherboards. Mac motherboards don't have a BIOS, for example. They also have a security chip to prove that they are Macs, which isn't found on non-Mac motherboards, and the OS won't run without it.
Apple's quality reputation is based upon them keeping tight control of the hardware. The majority of the issues with computers are related to hardware and drivers, so by manufacturing their own hardware, Apple has eliminated the source of most problems. That's why people say that Macs 'just work'. There have been emulators written to allow people to run Mac OS on non-Mac hardware, but Apple shuts them down quickly because they are illegal, and they are also a threat to Apple. If people started using them and had a bad experience, that would be bad for Apple, even though it wasn't their fault and was illegal to boot. The biggest headaches with these emulators is that there is a serious lack of hardware support and drivers, since they have to code all of the drivers themselves. If you're a software developer who enjoys writing device drivers for fun and troubleshooting, then you'll be fine (as long as you don't mind the threat of a lawsuit for copyright infringement). You also can't get updates since you'll be running an illegal system. But if you want the Mac experience and prefer not to have to code stuff on your own, then your only real option is to get a Mac. The Mac Mini starts at $600.00 - http://www.apple.com/macmini/ Plus, you can run Wincows on a Mac if you have Boot Camp, which is free. The Mac is able to emulate a BIOS to allow you to boot Windows or Linux or pretty much any other OS.

yes you can run so/x on a intel and AMD chips but not on it's own, you will need extra software to do it, same as the mac runs windows that uses extra software
In fact you can run any operating software you like on any computer system, using a dual boot system you can run any one of the versions of Linux and windows providing you have enough memory in your computer,
if you have not heard of Linux then do some research into it, it is a better faster and more secure operating system than MS Windows and it comes free with more software packages than you will ever need,
now to give you a insight into linux all the big computer manufactures use it on their business systems HP, DELL, COMPAQ, IBM, this is unknown to the general public
You can download Linux for free, and it is worth you looking into it take my word for it, the easiest Linux for new users is ubuntu or kubuntu, if/when you download it.... it will run off the CD rom without installing it onto your computer, you can do everything with it, the same as if it was installed onto your hard drive including getting on the internet, if you have broad band, dial up no.
Linux is window operating system just like ms windows xp it is point and click
so click on the links below and check it out you will not be sorry don't forget all the software is free to download including games
just read Rose D comment above and it is not true mac use unix/linux for their opreating system she needs to do some research into what can and can't be done....
wow.. just read the other comments let me put these in the picture also, mac computers Can't run windows without bootcamp software, that makes it a virtual machine it is that simple
Linux as a similar software package that will run sx/o opperating system also

Yes, it is possible, but it is a bit of a pain. The instructions are detailed at the site below:
http://www.uneasysilence.com/os-x-proven-hacked-and-running-on-an-ordinary-pc/
That "hack" and other similar ways are the only way to get it to work though. There is no official way to have osx on a pc. You can however, have windows on a mac... but that's not really relevant.
