Interrupt and make a date to call him back and keep the date. this person may be lonesome or in a manic phase.

Ha ha - I used to put up with that . . . oh man so many people burned my ears off!! I don't have the time or energy to deal with that anymore.
I used to tell people not to call me at work (but you just know people did anyway). I made up this whole false story that my boss could hear everything I said because his office window was above me . . . so I'd tell these callers I had to go cuz "he just walked in". I even made stupid code words to let my friends know that "he" just walked in . . . oh yah the callers got a kick that we were using "the code" in front of the boss (which was all not true). It was great when friends were in the middle of their blah blah blah and all I had to say was the code - and they'd totally understand and I hung up. HA!
These days, I am just totally straightforward and tell them I gotta go. I know which friends are the going to be the chatterboxes . . . so I tell them ahead of time that I can't talk very long. I don't tolerate anything as much as I used to!!!

This girl use to call me ALL the time and talk about nothing. Sometimes she would call and say "call me back, now" and hang up and then I'd have to call her back. Luckily we aren't friends anymore! Just say well if your a teenager just say like your banned from talking to friends on the phone. If your older, just say your going out so you have to get ready. If you have a family, just say your busy with the kids? Simple, you just have to find the right excuse!! He or she will eventually give up on calling if your busy all the time.

I have the kids go knock on the front door and then I very honestly say, "Oh my, someone is knocking on my door, bye for now". When my Mom would have someone call she did not want to talk to she would step out the front door and the kids would say she just stepped out...Wouldn't want them to fib huh. She got really funny and wrote above a closet door..."down the street". If a bill collector would call the kids could honestly say Mom was down the street lol. An honest fib huh. Ta ta there is someone knocking on my door. Mmm

say that you have to get off the phone because some guests have arived and that you will call that person back(i do it all the time)

Soon as they stop for a breath, tell them "I have to go now. I'll see you Saturday (or whatever) and we'll discuss it."
And hang up.
