It all depends on the scars, if the texture is very different it will still likely show but can be a great distractor.
Best to drop by a reputable studio and talk to the artist about it.
Also, if the scarring is very new and/or if you are still cutting, it is not going to work out until everything is well healed.
Edit notes: Only rarely do scars NOT take ink when done patiently and with the knowledge of how scars respond and what needs to be done for them. Expect touch ups.

it IS possible to get tattoos over scars but you should only get it done by a very experienced tattoo artist because the texture of scarred skin is much different and harder to tattoo (from what i have heard) also how well it will cover the scars depends a lot on how you are scarred. if they are raised or jagged they will still show up some, atleast in the texture of your skin. if they healed fairly smooth they should cover fine but there is always a chance of still being able to see a faint outline of them.
really the most important thing to do is to find a great artist who has experience with difficult tattoos. good luck!

it depends souly on where u have them done at (the tats) if the artist is good enough then they can dod a pretty good job covering things up.... but scars r a different story..... i have a large back piece done.... and i have a chicken pox scar that the ink and picture just wouldnt take..... my mom has a bracelet around her wrist and the same thing happened.... the ink just wouldnt take where the scar was... the best advise is go to the person that will be tatting u and talk to them... they can be the ones to tell u if they can cover them.... good luck

Self-injury/cutting
Introduction
For people who can't fathom deliberately hurting themselves, self-injury may seem shocking and frightening. But for people who do injure themselves by cutting or other means, self-injury offers a momentary sense of calm and a release of tension. Unfortunately, that's usually quickly followed by guilt and shame and the return of other painful emotions. And with self-injury comes the very real possibility of inflicting serious and even fatal injuries.
Self-injury isn't a specific disease or condition. Rather, it's a type of abnormal behavior. It may accompany a variety of mental disorders, such as depression and borderline personality disorder. Because self-injury is often done on impulse, it's sometimes considered an impulse-control behavior problem. Self-injury is also known as self-harm, self-injurious behavior and self-mutilation.

I was in prison and saw all kinds of markings. The look is a sign of tolerance and respect. I think you want to explain the time you served and could get a nice tat away from that area and close enough to say life mimics art.
