We have a woodpecker who is VERY persistent. We spray a foam in the hole to cover it up and he pecks around it. I cant keep it away.

Do not shoot it. It's illegal, and you can be fined or severely punished for doing so.

Check out this helpful page by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology -- it has a great list of suggestions for deterring woodpeckers.

Woodpeckers peck for at least two reasons. One is for food, and the other is to attract a mate. Come on dear it's spring and he or she is just doing what comes natural. We've all been there. Be happy for the lonesome little critter.

exactly WHERE is this hole?? Woodpeckers make cavities to nest in...what if there are eggs or chicks in the cavity and you keep blocking it off? FYI...it is illegal to shoot woodpeckers or even to harass them or their nests in you live ANYWHERE in the US..city limits has nothing to do with it. There is a law protecting all native birds...so don't listen to the peole suggesting you shoot it.

I have seen people hang pie tins up together like a homemade chimes and the sound of the pie tins banging together seemed to scare the woodpeckers away.

Most animals are protected... even iguanas, but people still kill and eat them at times. as kids we would do the usual, bb gun, rocks, sling shot. Cant do it now, living in condo community. I work nights so when sleeping in morning the woodpecker, mockingbird, and red cardinal join forces. But I have another permanent plan up my sleeve. (;

Yeah I am going to agree with the shoot him one. We had issues of woodpeckers pecking holes in our roof for bugs.....no more holes in the roof.
