One of the first things I taught my daughter was to share with others who are less fortunate. We went into her bedroom and went thru all of her things, setting up boxes of stuff to give to children's charities thru the church and local homeless shelters. She went thru her toys and books and clothes and shoes and we boxed everything up and I let her give them to the shelters and charities. Also taking them to the shelters to help feed the homeless is another good way to teaching them about giving to others.

A lot of teens are now having birthday parties with a twist: asking that food be donated as an "admission" to the party and then the canned/boxed goods delivered to a charity. The best way to teach a child so young is to allow her to SEE where her donations go and the good that they do.

Some real brave kids have the party and then choose 1, 2 or 3 gifts to keep and then donate the rest to a children's charity.

What does she like to do? For a child who likes animals have her do a fund-raiser for the local animal shelter or volunteer there once per week. If she is mature enough and likes -- say, dancing, allow her to run a free summer dance camp for younger or unfortunate children. Let her use her natural talents to do good for others.....you will be as greatly rewarded as she!

OR, let her select a cause from the news and ask for her ideas on what people could do to help HER cause!

These are great answers that you've gotten so far. But don't forget the most important of all -- teach her to be kind and perform acts of service to people right in front of her.

Jesus gave us the greatest example. He didn't stand and give mass healings or great mass miracles. He touched each person individually: the blind man, the beggar, the woman with an "issue of blood".

Does she have siblings or cousins? Does she go to school or church? There are always people struggling or needing help right in front of our faces. Teach her to watch for them and do good right there on the spot.

When we do good to those around us, it fills God's heart with joy, and He returns that joy to us. Then we become one (united) with Him.

Helping elderly neighbors with things that need getting done. Yard work, shoveling, anything really. Just having someone to talk to. Going to a rest home and spending a couple hours or more a week reading. See litter, pick it up. Teach her if she is ever able to help someone, do whatever is possible for her to do. Volunteer at a food shelf. Clothesline center.

The best way to teach children is by example in my opinion. If she sees you being mindful of others, she'll be mindful of others. It can be something as small and simple as being someones shoulder to cry on, or letting someone with fewer items go first in line at the market.
Some ideas for service are:
Helping elderly neighbors with yardwork.
Getting groceries for someone in need
Giving rides to someone in need.
Baking something or bringing dinner to someone who's sick.

You may not even realize it, but us mothers preform service EVERY day just with our families. Mothers are selfless and generally do all they can for their families. I think we set EXCELLENT examples for good service.

Deuteronomy 4 verse 40

"Therefore you shall keep his statutes and his commandments, which I command you this day, that it may go well with you, and with your children after you, and that you may prolong your days in the land which the LORD your God gives you for ever."

Throughout the bible it states that we should raise up or children in the ways of God Almighty.

There are many ways to teach a child to serve God. You know better than anyone what her attributes are. Match this with what would be a service to God.

visit elderly at nursing homes...this is very inexpensive and rewarding. You and your daughter could even put on little plays, singing etc.

Help elderly or poor or disabled neighbors by running errands
or doing household tasks for them....dishes, painting, lawn care (especially when it's hot)

Invite neighbor kids that don't have the best financial situations to birthday parties and give them gifts to take home (my wife loves doing this)

When you have a feast, invite the poor...if you can stand all the praises and "God bless you"'s that you'll get.

That is only a partial list but is all derived from:

Jam 1:27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

Luk 14:12 Then said he also to him that bade him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbors; lest they also bid thee again, and a recompense be made thee.
Luk 14:13 But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind:
Luk 14:14 And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just.

Spend time at an animal shelter helping with taking care of the animals. I will be starting that myself shortly, and I'm looking forward to it. A few other ideas: volunteering at a homeless shelter/soup kitchen, cleaning up trash along the roadways, spending time at a nursing home with residents, etc. Good luck. :)
