Mine looked like little tiny rubber/plastic rings. They made my jaw/teeth ache for awhile. I had them between my back teeth so they could fit the metal anchor bands around them that they attach the wires to.
I added a link to the best photo I could find-

Spacers are often placed between the back teeth a week or two prior to having the braces placed. These create space for the bands or rings to be fitted properly at the first braces appointment. The spacers can be annoying and cause some soreness of the teeth for two or three days.

They are a small, round piece of rubber (look like a small rubber band) that are placed between the teeth going to be banded when you get braces. They are placed usually between your back molars...sometimes lower front teeth, if you have a lot of crowding. They help to make space so it won't be so hard for the ortho tech. to band your teeth and not so painful for the patient.

They are small rubber bands placed between your teeth to make room for teeth to move around with your braces. They DO hirt and you can hardly chew when you have them. But the pain goes away in about a week.

They are just little wires they put between your teeth to make a space for the real braces. The first couple of days it feels like just what it is--something between your teeth. Then you get used to it, and they put the braces on.
