Baptism is important for those who trust Christ but one becomes a Christian by trusting in Jesus Christ for full payment for our sin.
Baptism should be the first step of obedience to the LORD. and following HIS commands are what makes us HIS disciple.

Baptismal regeneration is the belief that a person must be baptized in order to be saved. It is our contention that baptism is an important step of obedience for a Christian, but we adamantly reject baptism as being required for salvation. We strongly believe that each and every Christian should be water baptized by immersion. Baptism illustrates a believer’s identification with Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection. Romans 6:3-4 declares, “Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? We were therefore buried with Him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.” The action of being immersed in the water illustrates being buried with Christ. The action of coming out of the water pictures Christ’s resurrection.
Anything in addition to faith in Jesus Christ as being required for salvation is a works-based salvation. To add ANYTHING to the Gospel is to say that Jesus' death on the cross was not sufficient to purchase our salvation. To say that we must be baptized in order to be saved is to say that we must add our own good works and obedience to Christ's death in order to make it sufficient for salvation. Jesus' death alone paid for our sins (Romans 5:8; 2 Corinthians 5:21). Jesus' payment for our sins is appropriated to our "account" by faith alone (John 3:16; Acts 16:31; Ephesians 2:8-9). Therefore, baptism is an important step of obedience after salvation, but cannot be a requirement for salvation.

Jesus said, "He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved" Mark 16:16.
The apostle Peter comparing Noah and the flood to baptism said, "The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us." 1 Peter 3:21.

No, it is not a have to. Baptism is an outward showing of your faith, and obedience of the Lord Jesus Christ. I know of people that were bed ridden, that got saved and never was baptized. Some people think that baptism alone, saves you, but it don't.

I believe that to be true
refer to ACTS 2:38
38Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
and Mark 16:16
16Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.
seems pretty clear to me
why take chances?

Baptism is an act of obedience and you should be baptized.
( it is an outward symbolic washing away of the old person),however only the shed Blood of Jesus and acceptance of His sacrifice in our place can cleanse us from our sin.

I'll give you a tip: A Christian is anyone who follows the teachings and guidance of Jesus.
If you are doing as I said above then it doesn't matter what ceremonies you have been through or what others say, you know the truth and that is really all that matters.

The thief on the cross wasn't baptized. Baptism is a ritual, and as a ritual it is not harmful but neither does it alone save you.

Was the thief on the cross baptized ? no .. he was saved by Jesus at the very end . " Today thou shalt be with me in paradise ". It's a sign that you confess to everyone that you are a believer .
