I recently put a new hard drive in my G4 Ibook.
Now I go to install MAc OS 10.4 by inserting the CD and holding down the "C" key upon start up.
The apple comes up however shortly after this I get a "Kernel Panic" and the screen says something about Power book 6.5 and driver error of some sort.
What should I do???
Please help! Thanks!!!

It is a MacBook CD that was my sisters, it's also scratched. I was finguring that is the problem but I wasn't sure.
I got my guide to take the computer apart from Ifixit and I don't think the reassembly is the problem.

The hard drive was a brand new SEALED 80 GB Hitachi/ IBM travelstar for a G4 Ibook.

I am going to purchase system software tomorrow and hopefully that will help.
No, I have not partitioned the hard drive I didn't think I would have to considering it was brand new.
:)

It sounds to me like you might not have the correct system disks for the computer. Are they the ones that came with the machine or a purchased copy of Tiger? If they came with a different machine it might not work.

Does the original hard drive still work? If so, one idea might be to put it back into the machine, put the new one into an external Firewire enclosure, and clone the old one to the new one using Carbon Copy Cloner:

Then switch the disks and start the machine. I've done this and it works. It also moves all your files over to the new drive.

If you can't do that, you probably need to find original OS disks for that exact model of iBook, or a retail copy of Tiger.

Good luck.

Uhm, given the difficulty to open a G4, i'd guess you didn't close it right. look on ifixit.com for a guide... BUT if the disc (it's a dvd btw) is old, it might be scratched, and the drive could be aging bad, too thus giving read problems.

Edit: any eide laptop drive will do good. Formatting arrives after booting from the dvd (Utility menu- Disc Utility).

New hard drives have to be partitioned and formatted before loading anything on them. Did you do these things?
