the cylinders are numbers from front to back 1234 [56]
the firing order for four cylinders is 1342 the firing order for 4.o six is 153624.
the most common cause for this fault code is a bad spark plug or ignition wire. the 4.0 uses an ignition "cassette"consisting of 3 coils and operated on the wasted spark principle meaning that a high tension fault on #3 would also result in a misfire code on it's comanion cyl [#4] if only the one code suspect #3 plug however a bad #3 fuel injector or a mechanical fault [burned valve] will cause same code so preform a compression test on this cyl. before you replace spark plug if pressure is in the 135-160+ range your in good shape if you still have a miss suspect fuel injector good luck

i would test my compression and fuel before i went any further be sure spark is your problem and you may save yourself a lot of money usually if your firing order is off at least 2 cylinders will misfire although 4 cylindes can sometimes still ignite i hope you havent done a timing belt before this started happening good luck

Start with changing the spark plugs. Cylinder 3 is the 3rd plug back from the front. If you still want the firing order send me an e-mail and tell me which engine you have.
