I plan on goiong with AFS to Chile for 6 weeks in July either in a language program or community service program. But culture and language wise, is Chile a wonderful place?

Actually you can study broads anywhere, so I guess Chile is as good a place as any.

Yes, wonderful! I am not from Chile but I loved the country.

I found Chile, among all the Latin American countries I traveled to as the most friendly country with gentle people.

Culturally it is like any other Americas, a land of immigrants and settlers. Predominantly still of European descents though you can find other small minorities in Santiago. Food is continental. Wine is abundant and cheap. Don't forget to try white wine with canned peaches. Also a local "papaya" they call it. Also abalones.. excellent! Fruits.. they have some of the best ones in the world. Weather in the middle belt is like California. rain a lot in winter and dry in summer. And mild temperatures too.

Language - best if you speak Spanish. English is not popular except in business world.

Santiago, Chile. Chile is very risk-free, has a climate such as California, and has a ideal geographical area. there are various classes for foreigners interpreting overseas there. i would be interpreting there in a month

First remember is winter. NO beaches for you, but plenty of sky in the mountains.

Good choice, you will enjoy it.

Plus you can cross to Mendoza, Argentina through the Andes!

I would think and hope that any place you have not been to before would be wonderful.

If you decide not to go, can I have your ticket? S. America is one of two continents I have not seen yet and I can't wait.
