The previous owner painted squares on the wallpaper in a decorative display. I would like to remove the paint, but save the wall paper. Is this possible?

Probably not. Anything that you use, would lighten or discolor the wallpaper. In all likelihood the wall paper is faded, so if you do get the paint off, there would be a contrast.
