I am looking to buy a 30-06 rifle for deer/elk hunting in Nevada. I was wondering which manufacturer/model is the best choice? I have heard savage is a good rifle right off the shelf, but i want a little more input.

Bound's hubby here:

To Zach, personally ... I prefer the Remington 700s and Winchester Model 70s (when you can find them). The Savages, historically, have been great rifles ...however, for me, I do not like the styling/design of the Accu-trigger, to me it looks like a razor blade in the trigger shoe. I prefer smooth, wide triggers ... my preference. Ruger has a reputation for good rifles, but I have heard of high levels of inconsistency in their accuracy. Therefore, I would lean toward the Remington or a Winchester.

To "ally":
Yes, maybe we Americans are obsessed with our guns. A gun is a tool, just like any car, hammer, baseball bat, what ever. Tools are developed to make various tasks easier. Tools can, and are, misused. As much as some people misuse guns, others misuse automobiles, hammers, baseball bats, golf clubs, etc. If there were a move to ban any given tool after each reported misuse of a similar tool, we as both a society and a civilization would be back with the caveman. Automobiles and other tools are misused with fatal consequences more often than guns.

I challenge you to find as many reports of misused firearms in the news as there are reported autobile accidents with injury because of either negligence, roadrage, or the driver being under the influence.

To Zack, good luck!

A gun (rifle) is NOT a "sniper". A "sniper" is the person behind the stock looking through the scope and squeezing the trigger, and DAMNED few people are ever qualified to be called a "sniper". For the record, and as a matter of fact, the #1 rifle preference chosen by the U.S. Army snipers during the Vietnam conflict (?) was none other than the Remington Model 700 and their caliber of choice was the .30-06. When given the choice of an alternative, they selected the Winchester Model 70 in the same caliber. NOT because that's all there was in the world to choose from in those days, but because they knew just how effective those rifles and rounds would be in their very capable hands. Their proved their theory with bullets and blood. What they did is an historical fact that will take some time for anyone else to equal or surpass. Granted, longer shots have been scored since. But the overall confirmed kill numbers have yet to be matched. That will take some doing. And that will take some VERY exceptional and HIGHLY trained, extremely self-disciplined soldiers with what it takes to wear the hard earned and honored title of "Sniper". The rest of us can only hope to be considered marksmen or sharpshooters at best. Most won't even achieve that status. It takes a LOT more than just saying, "I've got a sniper rifle." Know what I mean?

I have owned several savages and have yet to have a complaint.
Right out of the box they will shoot with and in some cases out shoot some brands costing 2 to 3 times as much.
I am a fan of several brands Ruger, Remington, Savage and Mossberg,
You pick any one of these brands and you will be getting a quality weapon.
You choice in rifle and caliber is OUTSTANDING,

Savage makes a great rifle. So does Remington, Ruger, Winchester, Browning, Weatherby, Sako, Tikka, Steyr (Mannlicher) if you want to spend more money.

Good luck.

well i am a big time ruger fan, so i would have to go with a ruger. to me the savages feel too slippery, so that is why i won't buy one, if you like them, then by all means go for one they are probably good for there money.
