Close all other open programs, except antivirus. This includes wallpaper and screensaver which run in the background and uses part of your RAM. Review your start menu and remove any programs you don't need on a daily basis.

Bottom line: keep your RAM as free as possible.

If you have dial-up, that's about all you can do. Dial-up is notoriously slow.
