Ugly Stiks are made using the same process since 1946.
It's true. Prior to the advent of graphite in the early 70's
fiberglass ruled the fishing world. Dr. Arthur Howald invented a process to make a tubular glass rod, called the "Wonderod". This was the pre-cursor to the Ugly-Stik and millions of fishermen in the 40's, 50's,60's and early 70's used them. When graphite was introduced, Shakespeare began manufaturing Ugly Stiks using the "Howald" process
(the same as using glass fibers, but now they use graphite).
The difference between an Ugly-Stik and a conventional
graphite rod is that the Ugly-Stick is wound with fiberglass
and has a clear tip which is fiberglass. This does a few things
to the rod: 1) it makes it heavier than a conventional graphite rod. 2) it makes it more flexible beacause fiberglass bends more readily than graphite. 3) it also makes it a "slower"
less reactive rod. 4) because of the fiberglass it makes it
less likely to crack or break, hence "tougher". They are
good for live bait and crankbait applications where a slower rod is to be preferred.
If you're going to use spinnerbaits, you would want a rod with a faster action - hence all graphite.
There are many decent graphite rod to choose from for less than $50. Cabela's, Gander Mountain, Quantum, for example.
Be sure you stay away from rods that are "graphite composite". These are cheap and not well made.

Agree with everybody else answering the question, but deserve the best answer for this tidbit of information. The Ugly Stik has been field and lab tested, and has been voted the best of rods by many outdoor magazines.
Until someone comes up with something better, the Ugly Stik is the best, most durable rod out there. Shakespeare's whole line is pretty good, if you don't have the money for the Stik. But if you do, they are definitely worth it.
I have two Ugly Stik spinning combos. One, an ultralight that I use for panfish and smaller trout, but I have caught some 2-4 pound bass on it. The other is a heavier combo I use when fishing for bass, walleye, etc.
I have had the ultralight for about 10 years, and have no complaints whatsoever. If you by one, keep the reel oiled, and it should last you a long time.

Pheasent hit the nail on the head. Ugly Stiks, while quite indestructable, are not good for every type of fishing. Their tip is not sensitive enough for acturately detecting a soft bite because it is too flexible. For your spinnerbait, you'll want a stiffer tipped rod. The cheapest rod in this category, that is still a very good rod, is the Berkeley Lightningrod. These are probably the best buy on the market for lower end priced rods. You'll be quite pleased with it...To learn how to use the spinnerbait, or other baits, go to my website, www.bassfishingtipsresource.com and check out some of the articles...good luck

I have had a 7ft medium/heavy action Shakespeare rod for about 5 years now and I have no complaints. I have caught alot of good fish on it. About two years ago I caught an eight pound bass with it and a shakespeare spinning reel. They came in a combo that was only 30 dollars. It also handled a catfish one that had to weigh about 20 pounds. To bad it broke my line right by the boat lol. The reel played out on me about a year ago and I replaced it with an Abu Garcia but the pole is as good as ever.

I have four ugly sticks and am very pleased with them. One is an ultra lite, two are lite and the other is a 9 weight fly rod. I do make my own rods, both for spinning and fly fishing but, I feel, for the money you cannot beat an ugly stick.
