i'm not asking if all pagans are devil worshippers, i was just wondering if it was possible that a pagan can worship satan as one of their many deities. or is being a pagan and believing in satan contradictory?

This is a hard question to answer.

As a Theistic Satanist, I believe that none of the gods and goddesses that we worship are cosmic deities, they are all spirits and they all respond to different names, and some manifest themselves under one title to certain followers and a different title to others. And I know other like-minded believers who worship the same spirit that I do, but they refer to him as Pluto (the Roman god of the underworld), Abaddon (an ancient Hebrew destroyer god) or Osiris (the Egyptian god of the dead). They still consider themselves Satanists, although they could be considered Pagans -- as they worship gods that pre-date the idea of Christianity.

See, as Satanists, we don't think the idea of Satan fits into JUST the description of him given to us in The Bible -- he is much, much older than that, and has manifested himself in many ways throughout the ages. Although I relate very much to the image of the serpent and the Father of Wisdom, I also know to define Satan by that description alone would be severely limiting a deity which I have great love and respect for. Our worship is more ritual of adoration then it is of submission, and is more Pagan than Christian in that aspect. I'm also polytheistic, as I acknowledge Lilith as a goddess as well.

I guess this means that all Pagans aren't Satanists, but some Satanists are Pagans. I hope this didn't confuse you more, and if you have any more questions, feel free to email me!

pagans tend to have an inherent dislike of Satan, as Christians try to demonize anything pagan as Satanic.

So even the pagans who adopt some Christian imagery tend not to pick up the Satan aspect of Christianity.

But if you consider major aspects of Christianity of being actually pagan (the trinity, the quasi-divinity of Mary, Christmas), than Christians would be the only pagans who could worship satan.

it is significant bear in mind that the main radical fundamentalists of Christianity provide the the remainder of the gang a foul call. whilst the Jerry Falwells of the international insist we are all worshiping the devil, i'm exceptionally helpful maximum folk don't have faith that all and sundry pagans worship devil, yet many have heard this rumor from the depths of the non secular ideal and don't understand the fact of the subject. If somebody asks you approximately it, it is maximum suitable to no longer get disillusioned yet to comprehend that the asker probably basically needs to appreciate greater and to be reassured which you're no longer doing something dreadfully evil. answer flippantly and rationally, and extremely a number of the time all would be properly. What led to the theory? i'm no historian, yet i can furnish a available clarification. a pair of thousand years in the past, there exchange right into an prolonged-status custom among warring tribes that, while tribe A defeats tribe B, tribe B's gods are actually demons and devils who have been killed by employing the gods of tribe A. The catholic church's displacement of popular paganism took a matching attitude. The pagan gods have been demonized, and the inhabitants exchange into recommended to stick to the "one actual god". i urge you to overview the historic previous of the early Christian church in case you elect to overview greater.

Most pagans don't recognize the Abrahamic god so a belief in Satan would be misplaced. Pagans devote themselves to nature and the gods who call them. I suppose in theory some of these could be malevolant although the vast majority are just mischevious.

There was a big scare about Satanists in the 80's. As it turns out, even people who call themselves "Satanists" don't literally believe in Satan, for the same reason as mentioned above: they aren't Christians. Satan to them is a symbol, probably chosen because it makes Christians uncomfortable.

If someone tells you they worship the Christian Satan, they either need serious psychological help, or (more likely) just to get a life.

Satan is a Christian belief. Pagans are not Christians and therefore do not worship the Christian god Satan.

Pagan is a misunderstood word. It has the same meaning as peasant or peon, both of which come from a Latin word meaning someone who works with the soil. Anyone you might know who plants by the signs has vestiges of paganism in them. Pagan is Latin for redneck, if you wish.

As much as Pagans will deny it, it is satanic in nature. There is only one God, the true God (the creator). All others are lies perpetuated by Satan.
