When I was a Mormon for 36 years, you get babtized and are cleansed of all your sins up til then. Then you repent every night to jesus. The church is a church of works, you have a long list of things you must do after that to become a Goddess, so once you join, your job has just started, you have a lot of work cut out for you ahead. I like being a christian, all I had to do was confess I was a sinner, except Jesus into my heart and be saved, after that I just got involved in a church and I decided were I would apply myself in the church , instead of the bishopbrick telling me where I would serve, and what my gifts were. Just wait until you go to the temple and learn the other theology that is in their, the one they don't tell you about when you become a Mormon, you have to wait until you go to the temple before you learn about that stuff, I don't know why Mormons stick with the religion after they learn that stuff that goes on in their, its crazy.

Yes. We join the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints so that we can work towards perfection, and the joy and compelteness found in that. Repentance just invovles recognising things you've done that you're not proud of, admiting it to the people you have wronged (it helps them to forgive you), making restitution as best you can, and not doing it again.
Repentance on a daily basis helps us to overcome our weaknesses. In return for our commitment to serve other people and keep God's commandments (which we make at baptism - ie, when we join the church), we are given a wonderful gift called "the Gift of the Holy Ghost". It means that (if we live up to our commitments) we will ALWAYS have God's Spirit with us, as a constant companion, always giving us that peace inside, confidence and inspiration. It is such a beautiful feeling that it makes me want to give up all my sins, just so I can feel it more abundantly. It's a beautiful thing, and I can testify to the joy that the Spirit brings through repentance.

first you have to realise that baptism will cleanse you of the things you have done wrong but you must make a committment to doing the right things. repentance is a process of understanding what has been done in the past (and putting it behind you)and then looking to the future with out recommitting past indiscretions. You have only repented when you dont do those things again. Just understand once you have the spirit confirm you are doing the right thing it will lead to baptism.

Yes, you are supposed to pray for forgiveness and if it's something you don't feel like you can handle on your own, you're supposed to go to the Bishop and have him help you with the repentance process. The only way to be clean of your sins and off to a fresh start at baptism is to repent.
God bless you on the long but worth it road to the celestial kingdom!!!!

IF YOU ARE BAPTIZED INTO THE LDS CHURCH, THEN ALL YOUR SINS WILL BE WASHED AWAY, BUT AS SOON AS YOU SIN AFTER THAT, REPENTENCE IS NEEDED. IT REALLY IS A BLESSING THOUGH, SO DON'T THINK OF IT AS A "HAVE" TO. WHENEVER I REPENT OF A SIN, I FEEL SO MUCH BETTER AND I FEEL CLOSER TO MY SAVIOR. AFTER ALL, HE DIED ON THE CROSS SO THAT WE COULD REPENT OF OUR SINS.
WELL I'M GLAD YOU'RE ASKING ABOUT JOINING THE CHURCH.

Repentance is a universal requirement for almost every religious organization: an admission of imperfection. Some churches require confession to a priest, some only require a sincere prayer.
Mormons require you have an interview with the bishop. This man is a layperson, not trained in the ministry or theology, but "called by god". Usually he's an attorney or other successful professional by day, but puts in a significant amount of time seeing to the needs of his 'ward'. Some do an outstanding job, others don't.
Anyway, if you've done the typical badboy things, and feel really remorseful about it, you'll be encouraged to tell him about it. If you have signifcant socio-psychological problems, be aware that these bishops aren't prepared to handle situations like this. The best they can do is say "Read the Book of Mormon and pray.." I should add, "And get real help from a professional.."
Are you homosexual, or ever had that experiece? You'll have to promise never to be that way again. You'll have to see how Ted Haggard cured himself in six weeks of homosexuality.
Are you living with your girlfriend/boyfriend? You'll need to either move out or get married, unless it's a same sex deal, then you're out of the church anyway. The mormon church is a tad prudish.
After that ordeal, you'll be compared to all the other 'worthy' temple-going members in a never-ending battle to attain worthiness. It's a ecclesiastical peter contest from here on out. Tithing, fast offerings, temple attendance, rooting for the Cougars are all taken into account to determine your 'christ-like-ness'.
Whatver you do, participation on internet forums like this may consign you to outer darkness, and another thing you'll have to repent for. If you have a few problems now, just wait til after you've been a Morgbot for a while..

Yes. I would think that you should have to repent of your sins no matter what religion you decide to join though.

Yes, you need to repent of the sins you have committed.. you need to be sorry that you committed them and to try your best not to do them again.. this is before you join the Church...
But we will ask much more of you, we will ask you to continue to do your best not to sin, we will ask you to help others, we will ask you to visit other members each month, we will ask you to tithe 10% of your income to the Church (which does NOT go to pay the Clergy)...
We will also ask you to donate to help the poor, hungry, homeless, etc...
We will ask you to read the Book of Mormon (you can get a free copy at http://www.lds.com ) which will be given to you free of charge if you like...
We will ask you to pray many times a day.. every day.. for anything that is in your heart...
We will ask you to get up in front of the congregation and tell us what you believe (after you have become a member and are comfortable doing so)...
We will ask you to live without drinking Alcohol, Coffee, Tea, or other decaffeinated drinks...
We will ask you to live without smoking, chewing tobacco, or dipping snuff...
We will ask you to live without using recreational drugs (it is ok to use drugs for health reasons, as prescribed by a doctor)...
We will ask you to live, and not die eternally...
Edit: One last thing.. I hope you like Jello!
