Thats a very interesting question. I think what we need to consider is the amount of money that is invested in religion. The average donations pot in your local church may churn out about £10, but I presume the arcitecture you're interested in is dated beyond the roof problem? Religion conveys it's self to the lowest possible denominator. The masses. Religion teaches them to fear the after life and therefore 'buy' into the salvation cause. Religion does nothing more than take money for it's own means. It's a well know fact that ancient catholic church system was built by forcing the greatest minds of it's time to bow to it's cause. Therefore, it's credible to believe that with such an amount of money invested, a high standard or building would be achieved.

Religion do not produce good architecture - they may inspire but good architecture comes from man, not religion. The reason why man is able to produce good architecture is simply because man was created by God in God's image. Of all the creatures in the world, man is the only one that has the ability to create such wonderful architecture because God gave them this ability (not evolution otherwise the monkeys would be the creators and builders of the beautiful buildings and cities you see around the world.)
Open your eyes and your ears - see, hear and appreciate the wonderful works of God's hand all around you and stop trying to deny the fact that God exists!

Religion shallow, false and evil? There is an element of truth there but you did not present an intelligent definition!!! Marx once said that. 'Religion is opium to the masses.' Now that is an intelligent and ingenious way of putting it! But then again, you don't purport to exude intelligence and ingenuity do you? We all no the reason behind your volatile questions. Can't believe how many people rise to your bait! You are an easy two points...I suppose.

Good is subjective. Also the religion does not make the buildings people do.
Also not all religions are evil, I am pretty certain The Church Of The Drumming Monkey is not evil.

I believe the earliest buildings that weren't built purely for functionality were temples, or at least, buildings that were designed to ascend to the heavens....I guess architecture has been interwoven with religion since we came out of the cave.

Well I must admit I like St Paul's Cathedral, and Westminster Abbey for their architecture and historic value but nothing more. The buildings are steeped in history.

True christian religion produces far more than that.
I think you are talking about some of Christendoms old churches.
Well, Christendom has no part of the true christian religion.
Paul warned that those once apart of us would break away. And that is just what happened.

They raise enough money to hire the best architects and artists. Those that refuse to work for them are sent to the gallows for being heretics and possessed of the devil.

You ask such a question and then have the nerve to accuse religion of being shallow? Physician, heal thyself!
