You will be able to keep bras and underwear if they are all white and not thongs or anything. The shampoo and stuff will probably be taken because they want everyone to use the same kind to make cleaning the showers easier. Deoderant you will probably be able to keep and tampons will probably be taken but all females will buy a bunch at the exchange and put them in a community locker kind of thing so you won't bleed to death or anything. Tooth brushes and toothpaste you can probably keep. They will issue you tons of that kind of stuff night one when you get there. Your swimsuit also has to be ALL black or Navy blue to keep. Yes there is a list of things you can have and keep, but yes they do take a lot of it back and you mail it home. You will be able to keep a small bible, a small address book, stamps, and a small amount of letter writing materials. No photos if I remember correctly. Hope that helps. Also, go conservative in what you wear to boot camp. You don't want to stand out like a sore thumb with your princess t-shirt or purple hair, believe me you will regret anything you do to look cool or be an individual that stands out. If you dye your hair too, die it back to your real color tonight or you will be sorry about what it will look like in a few weeks. Good luck and don't quit anything in boot camp.

Most everything you bring will be boxed up and sent home. They allow you to keep your underpants and your bras (but they have to be white and they can't be thongs), and your hairbrush, and I'd bring toothbrush and toothpaste and a small bottle of shampoo, deodorant, tampons, and that kind of stuff, just because after you're through with your initial processing that first night, they'll have you take a shower and you'll really wish you had shampoo (although they'll give you soap). Just remember that whatever you wear, they're going to make fun of, so try to keep it as generic and respectable looking as possible, and if you have time, and you haven't done it yet, get your hair cut before you get there. The haircuts they give women at RTC are horrible! That and the CC's will give you all kinds of crap about keeping your hair.
Good luck and enjoy yourself. It's hard, but it's worth it.

The Marines put EVERYTHING they don't issue you in storage until you graduate. Within 2 hours of reaching Paris Island, you have ZERO possessions that are not government issue. That includes the underwear you were wearing when you arrived.
Edit: The let my keep my glasses for 2 days. They needed time to have replacements made.

They will supply you everything. The only thing you will be allowed to keep are religious items and a wedding ring. Even prescription meds will be evaluated by a doctor to see if you really need them.
DO NOT take any electronics.
Good luck!

Your personal stuff (like your clothes in a suitcase) will be locked up until you finish. You will keep your personal hygeine gear, so put in in a shaving kit of some sort. Razors that can detach will be taken away.

Don't worry about anything, Sweetheart. You will be TOTALLY taken care of and supplied with whatever you need. The DI will become your Momma, your Daddy, your boyfriend.....your EVERYTHING. Relax and go with the flow. Bootcamp is a push over. It will teach you all the basics and teamwork. It also is a "mind game". Like I said, go with the flow, don't buck anything. Keep yourself clean and your nose clean and you will glide through bootcamp.

The first thing they took was my civilian clothes ("civies") after we got our work uniforms. We sent them home in a cardbord box.
The second thing they took was my long hair and gave me a crewcut back..........
Good luck. Don't let the stress get to you.
