Before any one screams BYB or Puppymiller, some backround. The female in question is a dual champion and has all health clearances, hips etc. She is the sweetest thing. Has anyone successfully bred a dog after Pyo? She is my Dad's girl. After this happened, he got her spayed. Much to the chagrin of everyone, including the vet. She is awesome in the field and my Dad didn't want to lose her. Just wondering.

Since spaying is almost always necessary to save the bit ch's life, unless the cervix is open and he's not septic, it would be too great a risk. Plus, those that recover from pyometra have a real risk of getting it again. Your dad made the right decision to save her life!

Well, if she is spayed, there is no breeding then obviously. But I do know usually after a Pyometra, the vets at my clinic recommend spaying just for the safety of your pet, so it doesn't come back again at another time and cause more problems. Because as in your dad's case, most people don't want to lose their pets just for a Championship Show.

The Bloodhound in the picture over my name had the same problem. Not the duals, she came out of an Ohio junkyard with AKC papers with another AKC male. She's a beautiful hound, but the Pyometra was nasty. I had her spayed and everyone thought I was crazy. Of course I don't breed rescue dogs either. Your Dad sounds like a great guy.

The treatment for pyometra is a spay so no dogs are not able to be bred after surgery. I have never heard of anyone being able to treat it without a spay.

The treatment for Pyometria is an emergency spay, therefore the dog would no longer be capable of being bred.

Pyometria is a very, very serious uterine infection that is often fatal.

A dog with any type of serious vaginal or uterine infection should never be bred or attempted to be bred.

i don't know the answer to your question, but my dog is 59 days today and at 49 days i took her into the vet for an xray to see how many pups she was having, this is when we found out that she has pyometra. the vet performed surgery, he had to un twist her uterus and put her bowels back in place and removed some of the infection, he then put her on antibiotics. as of today she is still pregnant and i expect her to whelp any day now

NO you can t breed her because she was sprayed. When they are sprayed their reproductive parts are removed therefor they can never conceive a litter.
