I am flying from the U.S. to British Columbia in May. I am on crutches because of a broken foot. I'm planning to rent a wheelchair, but I don't know if I should rent it here and take it with me, or try to rent one once I get there? Any advice? I am traveling with my spouse, so I will have help.

Most airlines provide wheelchairs at the airport. Some may even give it free of charge.
It's important you tell them in advance of your flight, so there will be one available. For the rest of your vaction rent one at your destination, so you don't have to take it with you to the airport.

since all major airports and public transit stations have wheelchairs for bording purposes, I would not rent one at home and lug it around with me...besides hopefully you will be getting more able to move around on your own as time progresses. I bet your hotel will have a wheelchair for their guests too. Nope I would wait till I got over to B.C.

See if the hotel has one you can borrow, otherwise go ahead and rent it here so you'll have it there when you need it.

Otherwise Murphy's Law will kick in and the chair won't be where you need it at the time you need it.
