Previously a poster theorized that the fuse that lit the big bang was a gravitational force that compressed energy and matter until there was a explosion or an opposit reaction to the gravitational compression. This makes sense but where did the matter and the energy come from to begin this process? before the big bang?

Common theologian argument. "We can't explain it so god did it" At least scientist aren't being lazy and there out there trying to explain how things work. Remember that people used to believe that natural disaters and diseases were caused by god's wrath. Eventually science will explain things, but people want the answers right away so they fill the gaps in knowledge with god.

There's nothing to suggest the mass-energy hasn't always existed. We do not know if mass-energy had to be conserved before the universe, as we know it, came into existence.
