As a reporter stay focused on your job in reporting the news. Remember why you're there.
As a member of the military I'd say focus on the task at hand, oders you're given and the mission.
Stay positive even if you miss home and family and friends.
Count days till you get to see family again and be careful not to step into anything..or drive over anything...
Spend time with the guys in your unit when you have some "down time to take your mind of why you're there in the desert".

I found that you just had to decide to think positive. I had some rotten days, don't get me wrong!! But keeping a positive attitude not only helped me, but it helped my buddies too. My time "over there" was difficult and there was allot of ugliness going on, not to mention missing home, family and oh my goodness a decent shower... I got myself into a little "me time " routine. I would sit outside and look at the stars every night before I went to sleep. I found that it is hard to be down when you are staring at the most beautiful night sky ( Iraq has the most amazing night sky)
It was also important that I took care of myself- getting as much exercise as possible, staying away from those dratted video games, eating as well as I could, etc.,.. Not feeling your best affects your mood more than you realize. I hope that answers your question.

As far as I'm concerned, every day is a good day in a warzone. For those of us who step outside the wire, at any rate. You and your brothers in the platoon carry enough firepower to decimate a city block. You get to wield this power for good (or at least, I hope according to ROE) and you get paid. It's awesome. It's the only game like it in town.
Having a strong moral compass and a wicked sense of humor help greatly. Both of those get you through situations that border somewhere between frustration and tedium. You veer sharply between hours upon hours of mind-numbing boredom ("When is this patrol going to end?") and a few brief moments of head-clearing, time-slowing shock ("IED! IED!").
The man to your left and right will get you through the days when you find it hard summon the strength to make it through, and you do the same for them. I learned all about dressing game, every Top 40 hit from the 80s on, good bars and good food all across America, parasailing, rock climbing, and all sorts of weird and wonderful things from my buddies. Every day is a good day in a warzone.
