you will have to check your bank's guidelines for your account. Generally, most banks will honor it but nsf charges are up to nearly $30, if not higher. If you have a savings account, you can sign it up and use it for overdraft protection, at no extra charge usually. If you can scrape up some extra money, you might want to start a small savings account. Yeah, they'll only pay .1% (one dollar on a thousand) interest, but it beats that nsf charge anyday.

Unless you have an overdraft option against your account already in place, not only will they not honor your cheque, they will charge you for issuing a cheque that you couldn't cover. And where I am, the fee can be as high as $35.00 per cheque. Also it is an offense to issue cheques that you know can't/won't be honored.
Having said that years ago my husband and I had a cheque account and through a slight error found ourselves $3. under in the account. We rang the bank, and as the pay was going into the bank the following day, they agreed to honor it. So ring your bank as soon as possible.
Bouncing cheques can affect your credit rating too.

If you have overdraft protection on your account, they should honor it. You ought to do something about this serious lack of funds. That's a problem.

Some checking accounts have overdraft protection. But I think that even if you don't, they may still honor it.
