Hey~

"Conocer" can mean either two things: It can mean that you just know something or about something, i.e. "conoces al presidente" or it could mean that you actually know, know the person or thing.

It all depends on the sentence, and the connotation on which it is being used. Have to love the creativity of the Spanish language.

Success!

Conocer a alguien means to know someone. Le conoces al presidente? Translation: Do you know the president?.......de nada.

Well, conocer a alguien=to know or be familiar with someone. So, I guess it can be taken either way, but I think it is more of a "to be familiar with."

the best english translation for "conocer" I think would be the word "aquainted with". Are you "aquainted" with the president? Conoce al Presidente Bush?

Depends on who you are talking to. Mexican spanish is different and local where I live (Baja California South) It can be taken both ways.
Mostly , have you met the president
But they could mean do you know who he is..
A little confusing, but that is how they talk here.. The correct way would be Sabe usted quein es el Presidente?
