In general, no it is not a religion of peace, despite what some of its adherents will claim.
Muslims are quick to point to the violence recorded in the Christian bible and claim that Christianity’s early history was violent, too. But unlike the Bible where some very awful HISTORY is recorded, the violence described in the Qur’an is part of Islamic THEOLOGY. This is a very significant distinction between the two belief systems.
The famous Muslim scholar and “father of modern history” Ibn Khaldun (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ibn_Khaldun) states the dichotomy between jihad and defensive warfare thus:
In the Muslim community, the holy war [i.e. jihad] is a religious duty, because of the universalism of the Muslim mission and the obligation to convert everybody to Islam either by persuasion or by force... The other religious groups did not have a universal mission, and the holy war was not a religious duty for them, save only for purposes of defense... They are merely required to establish their religion among their own people. That is why the Israeilites after Moses and Joshua remained unconcerned with royal authority [e.g. a “caliphate”]. Their only concern was to establish their religion [not spread it to the nations]… But Islam is under obligation to gain power over other nations (The Muqudimmah, vol. 1 pg. 473).
I have found Islam to be philosophically indefensible, being internally incoherent or undermining human reason and experience. To better understand Islam as it is understood by others, I suggest you review the following sites:

Yes, I truly believe that Islamic religion is a religion of peace. The fundamental aspect of every religion itself proves it is a religion of peace. Why? If we understand the definition of religion we find that every religion develops behind the teachings of an enlightened soul. Not necessarily every enlightened soul has a following. But those that had a following... culminated into a religion!
Mahavira... the 24th Tirthankara of Jainism gained enlightenment and the religion was known as Jainism. The word Mahavira is not attributed to the religion Jainism because Jainism is never considered a religion... it is a way of life! About 77 years later followed Gautama Buddha. The masses that followed the teachings of Gautama Buddha became part of Buddhism religion.
About 423 years later came Jesus Christ. The teachings of Jesus Christ and his following was termed Christianity. Next followed Prophet Mohammed... the religion was named Islam. Nowhere in the Islamic teachings has one found teachings of hate for other religions. It just cannot be! Enlightened teachers who are absolutely pure in character never teach otherwise! The message is clear for all. Practice love for brotherhood.
Why is it so that many people world over think Islam is a religion that preaches fundamentalism! It is only for the reason that the religious masters of today spread messages of ill will for their own benefit. Unless and until such practices are in vogue... we cannot expect masses to flock to the religious masters. In the guise of providing solace to mankind... these so-called corrupt religious masters preach unethical teachings to the unwary masses.
To differentiate the wolf in sheep's clothing is difficult for the masses. They are too busy carrying the routines of their life. A little help now and then from the so-called religious masters makes them toe the line. The masses fail to interpret the distorted teachings projected to them. Osama bin laden is a direct creation of CIA, USA. He was instrumental in keeping the Russians at bay with his guerrilla force of about 5000 people.
After the end of the Cold War... these 5000 people in absence of slush funds from USA became terrorists. Does not mean... all followers of Islamic Dharma toe the same line. India primarily a Hindu country has about 300 million followers of Islam Dharma as its citizens. Where is the problem? Whenever a clash between the Hindus and the Muslims occur... it is primarily politically motivated... never otherwise!
In every Islamic country one would find only a handful of people turned terrorists... analyzing deep further we would find that their trust had been betrayed in the past. No human being is born a terrorist. One look at a child... can we ever say that one would become a terrorist later on! No.
As the latest installment of the faiths originating from Abraham (which also include Judaism and Christianity) Islam carries the same violent, exclusionary, and expansionist themes as the other two.
Both the writings and the practitioners in all three faiths are anything BUT peaceful.
Even the celebrated anniversaries have violent themes. Judaismcelebrates killing every first-born Egyptian male (as 'passing over' the Jewish ones), Christianity celebrates the passion and death of Jesus (in order to have a ressurection) and Islam celebrates the military victories of Mohammad.

Any religion that says all people will be of that religion and the rest die can't be called peaceful towards other religions.

No. It is not not the truth or a true religion. Read the book. It's junk and is more of satan than of God. But God told Ishmael he would be the linage of a nation. He just didn't tell him what kind of nation.

Not hardly!
The COW 2:96 And thou wilt find them greediest of mankind for life and (greedier) than the idolaters. (Each) one of them would like to be allowed to live a thousand years. And to live (a thousand years) would be no means remove him from the doom. Allah is Seer of what they do.
(Refering to the Jews)
The Family Of 'Imran 3:177 Those who purchase disbelief at the price of faith harm Allah not at all, but theirs will be a painful doom.
Women 4:74 Let those fight in the way of Allah who sell the life of this world for the other. Whoso fighteth in the way of Allah, be he slain or be he victorious, on him We shall bestow a vast reward.
(Rewarded for fighting in religious wars)
