i answered this question before & this is my tried & true method .. perfect results everytime too..
good luck & have fun at your family event :-)
start with at least one week old eggs for easiest peeling.
cover eggs with cool water at least an 1.5 inch above the eggs. bring to a complete boil as soon as it does cover & remove from heat let sit for 25 to 30 minutes, keep covered no peeking during this time either.. then drain and run cold water over eggs to cool then put in fridge. after the eggs are cold they are ready for the salad.
i have never had grey/green edges on my yolks with this recipe.

Place refrigerator cold eggs in cold water. Bring water to boil and let boil for 15 minutes. Take pan off of heat. Then slowly pour out hot water as you let cooler water run over the eggs from the kitchen tap. Do this a few times until you have only cold water in the pan. Let the eggs sit for about another 15 minutes. Then tap at one end and peel.
Never had to use anything else in the water. It is not necessary.

Start with eggs that are at least a week or two old.
Place in a pan of water, so that water just covers eggs
Add about 2 Tbsp of vinegar to the water.
Bring to a SLOW boil.
Allow to boil for 3 minutes, shut off heat, and let eggs sit in the hot water for 15 minutes.
Drain hot water and fill with cold.
Let sit for about 5 minutes and peel.

Get the biggest pot you possibly have. Place the eggs in, cover with cold water, bring it to a boil and then time it for 15 minutes. Then drain, give the pot a few shakes to crack the shells and run cold water over them and let them sit for 15-20 minutes. The shells will slip right off.
Trust me, I used to boil 2 flats (70 eggs) a week at work for over 8 years.

sheeesh! i dunno but where I come from anything more than 10 mins from start of water boiling will create the grey (sulphite) around the yolk. Do cool them straight away with cold water, & peel while still a little warm. A good trick if you want the yolks centred (for stuffing the eggs etc) is to gently shake the pot whilst still on the heat for a coupla mins MIDWAY thru boiling. But that's not necessary for potato salad! Yum, now i'm hungry! :-)

I make them like this....Put eggs in the pot in a single layer, cover with cold water. Bring to a rapid boil then remove from heat. Let sit in the hot water for 15-20 minutes. Pour out hot water and run cold water over eggs for a couple of minutes and then you either wait to cool or put ice in the water.

Depending on how many eggs you wish to hard-boil, let's say 1 dozen large eggs.
Pot big enough to hold 12 eggs, cover with cool water.
Bring them to a rapid boil tun down to medium
Boil them for 3 minutes. Turn off the heat leave the pot on the burner cover with lid and let sit for 5 minutes.
Run under cold water after the 5 minutes wait.
Peel them, and store them in a container in the refrigerator.

If you start with cold water and put the hotplate at high, in 15 minutes they should be hard boiled. Soft boiled is tougher.
I usually also puncture the broad end, to let the air out. That way they are less likely to crack.
After 15 minutes, pour out the hot water, and put them under running cold water for a minute. Makes them easy to peel.

To help prevent cracking, put them in the pot of water before the water gets hot enough to boil. After the water starts to boil, set the timer, leave the eggs in the boiling water for 15 mins.

put the eggs in a big enough pan cover them with coll water completely, add a shot of vinegar ( if one of them brake it will kind of hold it together) then put on the stove at med-high heat once th water starts boiling let it go for 8 minutes, turn off stove and let it stand for 3-5 minutes, then peel your perfect hard boiled eggs under running cool water, carefully they'll still be hot.
