Racist thoughts are irrational like phobias...is it a form of xenophobia or...?

Yes, racism is learned but some phobias are also learned. Children watch thier parents and learn to fear what they fear.

Although some racists may have co-exisiting psychiatric conditions, racism is not a mental disorder in and of itself.

I believe it's a product of upbringing for the most part, and often choice. When you become an adult, if you like the way you are, you choose not to be different. If you see the error of how you have been raised, you change it.

My parents were never racist or made any remarks or called people different from us names. That is the behavior my siblings and I learned, and now those are the things passed to my nephews and nieces. (I have no children.) My nephew plays on a couple of soccer teams which have players of all different nationalities. He's friends with everybody. Also plays football, friends with them too.

Having nothing to do with anything but upbringing, my mom saw me throw a straw paper out the window of the car when I was in my teens, and let me have the lecture. I have not thrown trash out since then. Another product of my upbringing.

No racism is not a mental disorder, and racism can either be a learned behavior, or in my opinion it is just in people's heads. I mean because think about how people who have been viewed as different have been treated in history. From people like gay teen Matthew Shephard, to trans gender teens like Gwen Araujo, and Teena Brandon to the mistreatment of blacks in the fifties, and before that. It all boils down to this these people were different whether it be by sexual orientation which was the case with Shephard, Araujo, and Brandon; Which contributed to them being murdered because they were different. Or by color which resulted in the mistreatment of blacks in the fifties. So if racists feel strongly about their beliefs, and join or form groups like the KKK then at this point racism is much like a mental disorder. Other then that racism is just like a poison in most people's heads that they can not get rid of, and sometimes because like I said it is just in people's heads, and can not be helped.

I think in some extreme cases, racism could be a mental disorder, but I don't feel that is true for the majority of racists. I think people who are racist are quite conscious and aware of their thoughts and feelings-- and the origin of the same. Racism is a moral decision, not an psychological one.

Racism is learned. If you watch very young children playing, they will play together regardless of their differences. It is not until they come under the influence of racism from an older child or adult, that these same children will grow up and discover that they no longer want to be friends because of their differences being skin color, religion, sexual preferences, class or culture.

Racism is a lack of Biblical education. We are all descendants of Noah, and Adam and Eve before him. God is our ultimate source; every person has His image. It is up to us to put our knowledge to use in practical situations.
