you need to eliminate 500 calories a day to lose 1 pound a week. 1500 a day would lose 3 lbs a week. seems awful strict though. use this calculator to find out how many calories you need to eat to say healthy.

about 3500 calories for 1 pound, so you are looking at 10500 calories..
