The Dutch West India Co. in 1624
(4 years after the establishment of Plymouth Colony by the Pilgrims in 1620.)

New York City was originally called:
New Amsterdam.

EDIT:
The Iroquois Federation
was founded by the Native Americans around 1450.
The federation was established south of Lake Ontario and consisted of most of what is now New York State and lands further to the south. Who knows how long Native Americans were living there before 1450!

EDIT2:
Sorry, I was talking about FOUNDED not FOUND.

HENRY HUDSON, under the auspices of the Dutch East India Company, first sailed up the Hudson River from Manhattan to Albany in 1609.

Indians have occupied the region for thousands of years.

Verrazano sailed by first, Henry Hudson (an Englishman working for the Dutch) sailed up the Hudson River soon after, in 1609.

The Dutch claimed the land (ignoring native owenership) and began settling a few years later (Albany/Fort Orange around 1614, New Amsterdam/New York around 1620), but lost it to Britain by 1675.

The British renamed it New York.
