I prefer the knowledge of understanding people through conversation and experience. It is much more personal, and you get to understand their feelings...
However, I also read books and use introspection. I love books that allow me to learn facts and wisdom through stories (eg historical or scientific novels). It feels more like real life experience, and you get to see things from the characters' perspectives.
I guess, "knowing your inner self" might be introspection and meditation - tuning in to the Divine. I do that, too, throughout my day, asking the "Spirit within" what it thinks of this or that idea.

I was so much the mask that had been applied by society and religion that almost all of myself was covered. However there was a disturbance within that caused myself to seek knowledge from books. Mine as all basic being is the truth all spiritual books point to. Ahhh, to stand naked all alone in the cosmos, who could ask for more? ~ : )

Both, because each is appropriate within its sphere of life. Knowledge, as in that which can be spoken of and written is books, is quite useful for most of daily life. Unspeakable knowledge, Wisdom, is that which so reorganizes the consciousness of the one who has tasted it that they find themselves living a more authentic life...actually feeling alive rather than that dull, tired feeling of going through the motions that so many of us feel.

I personally seek both. The final word I leave I leave for my inner self to choose. Either experience and/or written word bears witness to itself. Other words, follow your gut! It's never wrong!

When I started questing books were very useful (this was before the internet). But eventually we have to move on from others views, beliefs and opinions to form our own.
"Existence is beyond the power of words
To define,
Terms may be used
But are none of them absolute."
Witter Bynner's translation of the Tao Te Ching
Ultimately nobody can tell us the truth but ourselves.

Both. Reading books helps me learn other people's opinions. Knowing my inner self helps me find mine. I think that makes sense.

Books can only supplement the wisdom each of us carries and is able to discern through the observation of nature.
