Texas doesn't have a STATE income tax. Texans still pay FEDERAL income tax, at the same rate as people in other states. If you made $10K in the year, you are required to file, and will almost surely have some tax liability. If you had more withheld than your total liability, the extra will be refunded to you. If you didn't have enough withheld, you'll have to pay the balance.

If you made the 10K in 2006, and haven't filed yet, do it as soon as possible - you're already late.

You mom is right. There is no state income tax in Texas. There are several states like this. Florida, Tennessee, and Alaska jump to mind as well.
Interestingly, Alaska pays it's residents. The oil revenues (a percentage) are dispersed among every man, woman and child resident, and at some times have been in the thousands of dollars each. Imagine what that means to you if you are married and have five children!

Texas is one of 8 states (I think) that do not have a state income tax.

You'll still have to do the federal income tax thing, though.

Every body pays Federal income tax but some states do not have a state income tax, but usually they have a higher sales tax, I'm not sure what Texas does.
