Get your boyfriend to look into getting a "pardon". Depending on what sort of offence it was and how long ago it happened they can often get a Pardon for the criminal record. Although that still does not guarntee entrance to a country.

Passport Canada:

Can I obtain a passport if I have a criminal record?
The fact that a person has a criminal record will not necessarily prevent that person from obtaining a passport. We examine all passport applications and establish eligibility on a case-by-case basis.

Good luck! happy travels

You currently don't need a passport for land travel until June of 2009. They tried to change it earlier and it was postponed several times. Thus, some information, especially websites are out of date giving those old deadlines. As for flying. Yes, you would need a passport. However, you can't get on an international flight without one. The airline MUST check your passport to let you on the flight. Thus, you can't leave the US by air without one. I've seen people denied boarding! Anyway, here is a US and Canadian Government site that both say June 1.

You can get a passport with a criminal record. Whether other country's will accept you as a visitor if they check is another story. The U.S. for sure won't allow you to even fly over their country if they knew but if you fly non-stop from Canada to Mexico, you should have no problem.
