Well a good friend of mine would be alive today had he worn his belt, but he exercised his freedom not to and it killed him.

I can give you one excellent reason why safety belts save lives.

In a traffic crash, there are actually three collisions that occur. The first is the actual vehicle collision. The second is the human collision. The third is the internal collision.

To understand this you must first understand that when you are driving your vehicle down the road at, let's say, 55 mph, everything inside the car is also moving at 55 mph. This includes the cup of coffee in the cup holder, the cd's in the back seat, and any passengers. Now when a vehicle collides with another vehicle at this rate of speed, the vehicle goes from 55 mph to 0 mph in less than a second. Now to put that in perspective, it takes the normal sports car about 6 to 7 seconds to go from 0 to 60 mph. So, the vehicle stops in less than one second. Your body is still going 55 mph until it hits something that stops it like the steering column or the road after the individual goes through the window. This is the second collision. The third collision is the internal one. Every organ in your body is traveling at 55 mph until your body stops. Your internal organs then slam into your bones at 55 mph.

A safety belt redistributes the pressure of a collision across strong bones like the chest, collar, hip, ect. The safety belt stretches, slowing the body at a much reduced speed which reduces harm to the internal organs. When this is used in union with an airbag most severe injuries are reduced to broken bones or bruises.

You can visit just about any State Department of Transportation website and see reduction factors recorded as a result of safety belt usage.

For starters, the LAW sucks. I have enough sense to buckle-up because:
1) unlike airbags, seat belts are a proven lifesaver
2) seat belts should be used because it is a very uncomplicated, elegant use of common sense safety.
3) the only law that should mandate seat belt use is for children (because even though I am totally in favor of the law of natural selection I still believe children should be protected in spite of their parent's stupidity).

Good law #1: Keeping the driver in the seat during evasive manuevers to avoid an accident.
Good law #2: Keeping occupants from becoming missiles during an accident (ask NJ Gov. Jon Corzine)
Good law #3: Preventing &/or reducing injuries that result from accidents.

Good luck!!

Cars are designed to crumple around the passenger compartment, so using seatbelts keeps the passengers inside the safety zone.

Passengers always travel toward the impact, so using a seatbelt keeps you away from the impact.

Seatbelts help prevent injuries.

Seatbelts save lives

Seatbelts help keep the driver upright, in a better driving position and more alert.

If you don't want to die its a good law. I need them as a passenger mostly. It makes for good habits as an answer.

It's not a good law if it's your time to die then you are going to die anyway it's just a way for the government to make more money

Sorry, I can't even think of one reason how it is good, unless robbing us of freedom is good.
